Position Summary:
Reporting to the Director of Junior School, the Junior School Physical Education Teacher provides high-quality health and physical education instruction to develop students’ knowledge, skills, and physical confidence. This position is a vital part of the Junior School faculty, contributing to a transformative educational experience within a positive and engaged environment. This department falls under the Junior School division, which includes Junior Kindergarten through Grade 5.
Key Responsibilities & Expectations:
- Using a lens of social-emotional learning, create a class environment and rapport that inspires and supports learning and personal growth.
- Design and implement engaging, differentiated lesson plans for Physical and Health Education that align with the school’s curriculum and “Whole Child” philosophy.
- Develop educated citizens who have the knowledge, skills, and understanding they need to be safe, active, and healthy citizens throughout their lives.
- Foster an inclusive, encouraging, and safe environment that motivates all students to participate regardless of skill level.
- Serve as the First Aid Lead for the Junior School, coordinating emergency response protocols, maintaining first aid kits across the campus, and acting as the primary point of contact for medical incidents during school hours.
- Observe and evaluate individual student performance, social development, and physical health to ensure holistic growth.
- Maintain current, accurate, and confidential progress reports and student records.
- Organize and supervise extracurricular sports programs, athletic events, and school-wide athletic initiatives, liaising with counterparts at other schools and SMUS’ Athletic Director.
- Collaborate with grade-level teachers and faculty to integrate physical education concepts into the broader school curriculum.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with parents, staff, and students regarding program updates and student progress.
- Manage sports equipment and facilities to ensure they are safe, organized, and ready for daily use.
- Adapt teaching strategies and instructional materials to meet the diverse learning needs and measurable results of all students.
- Participate enthusiastically in the school’s co-curricular programs and community events.
- Monitor the constant safety and well-being of students during all physical activities.
- Perform other duties as required.
The successful candidate will have the following skills, background and interest:
- Education: Bachelor of Education Degree (Elementary focus preferred) and an undergraduate degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, or related field.
- BC Teachers Certification.
- Minimum three years teaching Physical & Health Education in Junior School grades, including experience coaching athletics teams.
- Must hold valid Standard First Aid & CPR-C, specialized First Aid certification is highly desirable for the First Aid Lead role.
- Strong curriculum development skills and assessment practices that incorporate strategies relevant to the age and stage.
- Ability to work independently with little direct supervision as well as being a collaborative team member.
- A relational educator who incorporates Social-Emotional Learning and emotional coaching strategies into their practice.
- Knowledge of relevant technology and able to work in a laptop and online environment
- Embrace innovation and collaboration.
- High level of attention to detail and the capacity to be a proactive and analytical problem solver.
- Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and mediation skills with a warm and engaging demeanor.
- Organized with the ability to work under deadlines with conflicting demands.

Salary:
Annual salary range: $76,631 – $124,026.
Criminal Record Check:
Must pass and maintain a clear Solicitor General criminal record check for the purpose of working with children.
