Assistant Houseparents 
Starting August 2024 
St. Michaels University School (SMUS) is seeking applications from those interested in becoming an Assistant Houseparent to join our Boarding Program. More than 250 students in Grades 8 to 12 worldwide live on our Richmond Road campus as Boarding students. They are supported by a team of houseparents who act as guides, mentors and friends 
Reporting to the Director of Boarding and Student Life, in conjunction with the Senior Houseparent, the Assistant Houseparent supports the Houseparent team in running the house. 
This role is effective in late August 2024. We have vacancies in both boys’ and girls’ dormitories.  

Responsibilities include: 

  • Along with the Senior Houseparent, works with a team of houseparents in the house by providing pastoral care and building positive relationships with students in their house. 
  • Supports administrative aspects of the functioning of the house as delegated by the Senior Houseparent. 
  • Works collaboratively with Faculty, the Health Centre and Counselling staff to support students. 
  • Demonstrates commitment to working with all students and adults in the House, and with other members of the school community in support of their students and the Boarding Program. 
  • Creates a Boarding environment that fosters personal and social responsibility within the house. 
  • Participates in House, Boarding, and School community events. 
  • Will be required to complete First Aid CPR level C. 

Experience and Qualifications: 

  • Experience working with youth in a Boarding or similar setting is an asset. 
  • Good understanding of the health and wellness needs of youth, as well as experience in adolescent behaviour. 
  • Experience working collaboratively with staff and parents. 
  • Experience with the development of skills such as leadership, empowerment through coaching and feedback, conflict resolution, mental health interventions, and understanding of different cultures. 
  • Well suited to those with education in a related discipline, such as Secondary Education, Counselling, or Psychology. 
  • Energetic, self-motivated and team-oriented.
  • Ability to adapt to a variety of situations. 

Time Commitment: 

There are approximately 44 hours of scheduled duty per month which can take place on either days or evenings, any day of the week.  

Compensation includes the following: 

  1. Meals in the dining hall during the duration of the contract term. Meals are a taxable benefit.
  2. Housing in shared accommodation. Accommodation is a taxable benefit. 

Criminal Record Check: 
Must pass and maintain a clear Solicitor General criminal record check for the purpose of working with children.
