St. Michaels University School’s External Programs Department offers an array of educational enrichment programs for all students. During holiday periods (winter, spring, summer breaks), the programs provide a learning experience for students aged 5-16 that emphasize skill development, cooperation, participation, and fun. 

The Position: 

Every summer, SMUS delivers exceptional overnight camps designed for youth aged 13-16. Our camps include programs in leadership, engineering, game development, ethical hacking, music and sports.   

Under the direction of the Director of External Programs, the Communication Assistant is instrumental in facilitating the internal and external communication for the department.  This position also supports many of St. Michaels University School (SMUS) events and summer activities, capturing photos and videos to be shared with families through a variety of channels.  

Work Schedule:  

June 15, 2026: required orientation session.  

June 15 to August 21, 2026: 30-35 hours per week, daily hours may vary. 

Responsibilities include: 

Drafts and sends weekly summer staff bulletins. 
Creates social media posts and replies to comments when needed. 
Captures photo and video content of all camps. 
Creates media presentations for the weekly farewell celebrations.  
Sends camp notices, reminders, and surveys to families. 
Joins off-campus activities to take photos and to assist with supervision.  
Creates a photo filing system that abides by best practice file naming conventions. 
Ensures photo consent has been received before taking photos of participants.  
Works with other staff to collect photos and video content. 
Attends weekly meetings with the Director and administrative team.  
Performs other office administration duties as needed.  
Experience and Qualifications: 

Completed or enrolled in relevant post-secondary education such as Communications, Marketing, or related field. 
Experience with photography and working on a variety of social media platforms. 
Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills. 
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. 
Demonstrated cultural awareness and excellent intercultural communication skills. 
Ability to be tactful, demonstrate excellent judgment, and work as a positive and collaborative team member. 
Enthusiastic, energetic, a self-starter. 
Ability to work independently, set priorities and schedule and meet deadlines with conflicting demands. 
Ability to work cooperatively and develop positive working relationships. 
Demonstrated attention to detail and organization skills. 
Experience using Microsoft Office software: Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, InDesign and Photoshop. 
Ability to create and edit a wide variety of documents. 
Pay Range:  

Hourly pay range: $24.16 – $28.42 

Criminal Record Check:  

Must pass and maintain a clear Solicitor General criminal record check for the purpose of working with children.
