*The annual salary range will be updated with the 2026/27 salary grid. The range outlined is for 2025/26.

Position Overview:
St. George’s School invites applications for an experienced, energetic, and compassionate University Counsellor to join a highly collaborative and innovative Department that places student growth, empowerment, and agency at the forefront of its work.
The ideal candidate will be relationship-oriented and champion the School’s mission of “one boy at a time”, recognizing each student’s uniqueness and need for personalized support in planning for the future, within the context of a supportive and connected community. We are looking for a highly relational individual who can help guide and counsel our students as they embark on their individual post-secondary journey, by providing current information and effective strategies to help them navigate the process. Together with other colleagues, the University Counsellor is committed to engaging each student in developing a sense of direction and purpose for a meaningful future. Given the responsibilities of this role, there is an increased time commitment that requires availability beyond the regular school day and at times, into regular school breaks.
This successful candidate will have teaching responsibilities equivalent to one block (0.2 FTE). Faculty are required to support the School’s advisory program, and also the co-curricular program for two of three terms. The co-curricular program includes recreational athletics, competitive athletics, and academic clubs, and is offered a minimum of two times per week per term.

Key Responsibilities:
- Brings a diversity of voices and worldviews to counselling and learning experiences, including Indigenous, local, and global perspectives.
- Provides advice and insight into the creation/revision of academic policies, and guides students in navigating processes and policies relating to course selection and course changes.
- Supports students in all aspects of the future and post-secondary planning from Grades 8-12.
- Shares in coordinating and supporting special events relating to post-secondary planning and visits, such as evening presentations, parent coffee-mornings, and student workshops.
- Responds in a timely, empathetic, and empowering manner to the needs of students and families to discuss, advise, and support the post-secondary planning process.
- Tracks students and their applications to ensure satisfactory completion and submission of all material required by universities.
- Supports students in all aspects of post-secondary planning including essay writing, interview preparation, resume-building, time management, and organization.
- Communicates with university admissions officers throughout the year, reporting students’ academic, personal and co-curricular progress and achievement.
- Confers with faculty and writes compelling recommendation letters on behalf of students.
- Shares in supporting students with unique needs, including students in Boarding and student-athletes in the recruitment process, etc.
- Supports, encourages, and promotes overall student involvement in School’s co-curricular programs.
- Understands and complies with School policies and procedures especially relating to course selection, assessment practices, academic policies, etc.
- Uses up-to-date and innovative technology as a means of communicating, managing and supporting students, parents and faculty throughout the university planning and admissions process.
- Stays current with university trends and post-secondary landscape by reading, attending meetings and conferences, and speaking with university representatives.
- Visits university campuses to ensure familiarity with developments in university curricula, admissions trends and expectations, student life, and serves as an ambassador for the St. George’s School community.
- Shares in representing the school at various professional meetings relating to university placement. These include NACAC, IACAC, professional development and networking workshops, and meetings of local University Counsellors.
- Teaching responsibility equivalent to one block (0.2 FTE) and contributing to the advisory and co-curricular programs.
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of and experience with university counselling theory and practice, including Canadian, US and UK admissions processes.
- Valid BC Teaching Certificate or maintains the ability to get certified prior to the 2026/27 academic year.
- Experience working with students, preferably in a high school setting.
- Growth mindset and commitment to professional growth, and demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and justice in personal and professional practices.
- Superior ability to build rapport, trust and caring relationships with students and families.
- Superior ability to garner confidence from a network of key stakeholders (i.e. parents, students, faculty members, external professional networks and services).
- Advanced communication skills, especially in public/group presentations and formal writing.
- Strong individual and group counselling and communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to support students through reflective practices.
- Ability to develop, maintain, and cultivate positive relationships with university admissions representatives around the world.
- Commitment to working to the highest ethical standards in dealing with students, families, and universities.
- Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
- Familiarity with computer-based transcripts, student schedules, Naviance, and Google Suite.
- Ability to establish effective systems for tracking, recording and conveying important data, information and school documents in support of students’ educational goals and the School’s policies, philosophies, and practices.
- Collaborative team player with excellent interpersonal skills, with a particular emphasis on collaborative planning and assessment.
- Superior EQ skills in self-awareness, self-management, social agility, impact and influence.
