About York House School
It all began on the corner of Granville and 28th where seven fearless women welcomed 17 students to the very first York House School in 1932. Nearly a century later, thousands of students have found their unique path and purpose at YHS. Our School has since grown into one of Canada’s leading independent schools for girls. Today, we serve approximately 700 students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12.

About this role

York House School is inviting applications from dynamic, skilled, and creative Music and Band teachers committed to continuing to grow a strong instrumental program and love of music with students ages 12-18. The successful candidate will demonstrate a passion for music, for teaching and learning, for girls’ education as well as excellence in instructional, assessment, and performance practices. A contributor to a vibrant, close-knit learning community, this individual will inspire, connect, and enable students to live, learn, and lead well in a girls school. They will be involved in the vibrant curricular and co-curricular life of the school including the facilitation of winter and spring performances. This teaching position involves teaching full-time Music and Band in the Senior School, which entails early morning starts, beginning in September 2026.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Music or Music Education, or academic equivalent
  • Major concentration in music education 
  • Course work and/or knowledge of strategies for instruction in music
  • Expertise in knowledge and teaching of instrumental music programs
  • British Columbia Teachers certification or equivalent
  • Experience teaching with Orff methodology is an asset
  • Prefer five years of Secondary School music teaching experience 
  • Independent School experience is an asset

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Strong knowledge of British Columbia Curriculum and pedagogy and assessment practice
  • Demonstrated experience teaching in a strong instrumental music program including various band and ensembles
  • Strong knowledge of music theory, instrument-specific teaching methods and conducting 
  • Passion for increasing knowledge of musical styles, genres and techniques
  • Knowledge of the current research on girls and learning
  • Demonstrated experience as an enthusiastic, innovative, and caring educator with a commitment to diversity and inclusion 
  • Collaborative and flexible, supportive and effective team-player with a sense of humour
  • Ability to develop strong professional relationships with all stakeholders
  • Exemplary communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to educating the whole student
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate current technology (such as Garageband, media equipment) to enhance learning
  • Demonstrated ability to differentiate instruction and assessment practices to meet the diverse needs of individual learners
  • Experience with using Understanding by Design as a framework to teach for deeper understanding
  • Experience using an inquiry-based and project-based learning approach
  • Committed to continuous professional growth and improvement
