St. George’s School is seeking an experienced, innovative, and energized teaching professional to join our Junior School Student Services Department in a uniquely blended role.
This position bridges general student services support with specialized innovative programming. You will actively manage a small caseload of students requiring learning support, while also overseeing the Junior School Makerspace—a vibrant hub where boys create through inquiry-based projects and iterative engineering challenges. Equipped with everything from low-tech cardboard construction to advanced LEGO Spike and Vex robotics, the Makerspace encourages boys to test hypotheses and solve real-world problems through hands-on experimentation.
As a faculty member, you will also engage in the school’s vibrant community by participating in the co-curricular program (athletics, arts, academic, or community clubs) for two out of three terms.
We are looking to hire teachers who embody St. George’s School’s core values: empathy, integrity, humility, respect, responsibility, and resilience.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Student Services, Gifted Programming & Inclusive Practices
- SBT Collaboration: Work directly under the umbrella of the Student Services department, actively participating as a core member of the School-based Team (SBT).
- Caseload & IEP Management: Write, monitor, and implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and Student Support Plans (SSPs) for students with learning needs.
- Stakeholder Meetings: Lead formal IEP meetings twice yearly with all relevant stakeholders, including parents, administrators, and classroom teachers.
- Gifted & Enrichment Support: Provide specialized learning enrichment opportunities to students across the curriculum.
- Diverse Learning Styles: Create, adapt, and apply planned activities and differentiation strategies that support and celebrate different learning styles, ensuring all students succeed.
2. Makerspace, Robotics & STEM Programming
- Project Design: Design and lead projects that allow students of all abilities to engage with real-world tasks, encouraging them to iterate and push themselves toward complex engineering solutions.
- Curriculum Alignment: Collaborate with classroom teachers to align Makerspace projects with grade-level standards, specifically in Science, Math, and Language Arts.
- STEM & Robotics Instruction: Collaborate with the ADST (Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies) team to instruct students in age-appropriate STEM principles, robotics (e.g., Edison, LEGO Spike, Vex), and block-based coding to solve specific engineering “missions.”
- Safety & Tool Compliance: Oversee the safety and functionality of tools ranging from low-tech cardboard cutters and hot glue guns to advanced 3D printers, power machinery, and lathes.
3. Faculty Collaboration & Culturally Responsive Pedagogy
- Collaborative Lesson Planning: Partner with classroom teachers to co-plan lessons, integrating pre-assessments, co-teaching methods, and instructional strategies that support diverse learners.
- Faculty Consultations: Act as a resource and consultant for staff to aid with differentiation, and provide training/support to faculty as new educational technologies or software are implemented.
- Inclusive Environment: Ensure the Makerspace is a culturally responsive, accessible environment where all students—regardless of interest, age, or ability—see themselves as capable engineers, creators, and inventors.
- Professional Growth & Networking: Network with external resource teachers to share best practices; demonstrate a commitment to continuous professional development, reflection, and applying key pedagogical learnings to the teaching craft.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Education: Post-secondary degree in Special Education, Gifted Education, Inquiry-based learning, or a related field preferred.
- Certification: BC Certified Teacher (or eligible for certification by the start of the 2026/27 school year).
- Experience: Proven experience working with enriched/gifted students and students requiring learning support.
- Experience managing or utilizing a MakerSpace, STEM lab, or design-thinking environment is highly desirable.
- Knowledge: Strong understanding of the BC elementary curriculum (Grades K-7) and a diverse range of worldviews, including Indigenous, local, and global perspectives.
- Interpersonal Skills: Exceptional emotional intelligence (EQ) , strong classroom management, and the ability to build deep rapport with students, parents, and staff.
