It all began on the corner of Granville and 28th where seven fearless women welcomed 17 students to the very first York House School in 1932. Nearly a century later, thousands of students have found their unique path and purpose at YHS. Our School has since grown into one of Canada’s leading independent schools for girls. About This Role:

Our school is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Associate Teacher to join our Junior School faculty. This is a dedicated, entry-level, one-year contract position designed to develop a pipeline of outstanding beginning educators. As an Associate Teacher, you will gain extensive, hands-on experience in our school culture, program methodology, and learning approaches. You will be an integral member of the Junior School team, participating fully in the daily life of the school community through a dynamic schedule.

Qualifications:

  • Must hold a valid British Columbia Teaching Certificate, or eligibility to obtain one prior to employment.
  • Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) or equivalent teaching certification.
  • Minimal post-certification teaching experience required; individuals whose experience is limited to their practicum are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Demonstrated dedication to professional growth, continuous learning, and collaboration within a team environment.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Understanding of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and differentiation strategies to support diverse student needs.
  • Familiarity with social-emotional learning practices and the ability to implement these strategies in a junior school setting.
  • Ability to work closely with teachers, Learning Strategies Specialists, and the School Counsellor to implement consistent student support strategies.
  • Flexibility to manage a dynamic schedule that may change throughout the year based on program needs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively engage with students and colleagues within a professional faculty environment.

 

Responsibilities

  • Support teachers to facilitate integrated learning in classrooms grounded in inquiry-based learning and the Reggio Emilia Approach.
  • Teach collaboratively with classroom and specialist teachers, supporting small group instruction and differentiated activities.
  • Participate in curriculum planning and team meetings. Collaborate on student assessment and data gathering (note: this role does not have sole responsibility for formal report cards or parent communication).
  • Support the integration of social-emotional learning into lessons (i.e. lessons on emotional regulation and building peer relationships).
  • Reinforce positive student engagement and school values during transitions and unstructured settings to maintain an inclusive environment.
  • Fully participate in assigned co-curricular activities as part of faculty responsibilities.
  • Participate in student supervision duties, including recess and lunch.

Compensation will be equivalent to 80% of the placement on the teacher salary grid (From $67,741.00 to $121,179.41) in the Collective Agreement with BCGEU, and will typically be based on Step 1 of the grid.
