Vancouver Talmud Torah is currently seeking a Full-time (1.0 FTE) Director of Information Technology (IT).

Vancouver Talmud Torah is a mission-driven independent school in Vancouver, BC, serving students from Early Learning through Grade 12. Our school values academic excellence, community, innovation, and student well-being.  Technology plays a vital role in supporting learning, operations, communication, and security across our campus.  We are seeking a skilled and forward-thinking Director of IT to provide leadership for all aspects of school technology.

Position Summary

The Director of IT provides both strategic direction and operational oversight of the school’s technology environment. This role ensures that all systems—network infrastructure, cybersecurity, student and staff platforms, digital learning tools, and technical support services—are reliable, secure, and aligned with the school’s mission and future priorities.  The successful candidate will be a hands-on leader who can balance day-to-day service delivery with long-term planning, digital transformation, and responsible adoption of emerging technologies.

Key Responsibilities:

Technology Leadership & Strategic Planning

  • Develop and implement a multi-year technology strategy aligned with school priorities and educational goals.
  • Advise senior leadership on technology investments, risks, and opportunities.
  • Establish and maintain IT governance, policies, and service standards.

IT Operations & Service Delivery

  • Oversee daily IT operations including infrastructure, systems administration, networks, and end-user support.
  • Ensure high availability, performance, and reliability of school technology services.
  • Lead IT service management processes including helpdesk workflows, prioritization, and continuous improvement.

Cybersecurity, Privacy & Risk Management

  • Lead the school’s cybersecurity program, including prevention, monitoring, and incident response.
  • Maintain security controls such as firewalls, endpoint protection, secure authentication, and access management.
  • Ensure compliance with privacy requirements and responsible handling of student and staff data.
  • Provide training and guidance to staff to promote safe and appropriate technology use.

Systems, Platforms & Digital Infrastructure

  • Manage core school systems including student information systems, learning platforms, identity services, and productivity tools.
  • Oversee backups, disaster recovery planning, and business continuity testing.
  • Maintain documentation and procedures to support sustainable operations.

Student Subscription & Digital Access Management

  • Oversee provisioning and lifecycle management of student technology subscriptions, software licensing, and digital learning tools.
  • Manage student account creation, rostering, and secure access across key academic platforms.
  • Track license usage, renewals, and cost-effective allocation of digital resources.
  • Ensure student-facing tools meet expectations for privacy, security, and responsible use.

Campus Technology & Physical Security Systems

  • Oversee technology systems that intersect with campus operations, including access control, surveillance, communication systems, and other facility-integrated technologies.

Team Leadership, Vendors & Budget Oversight

  • Lead and support IT staff and external consultants, fostering a service-oriented and collaborative culture.
  • Manage vendor relationships, contracts, renewals, procurement, and IT budgeting.
  • Ensure technology investments are sustainable, cost-effective, and aligned with school priorities.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 7 years of progressive IT experience, including leadership responsibility in a complex environment.
  • Expertise in enterprise IT operations: networking, cloud services, identity/access management, endpoint systems, and support delivery.
  • Demonstrated experience leading cybersecurity practices, policies, and incident response.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with educators, administrators, students, and families.

Technical Skills & Platform Proficiency

  • The successful candidate will demonstrate a high level of proficiency with modern school-based IT platforms, including many of the following (or closely similar systems):
    • Google Workspace administration (user lifecycle, security, access controls)
    • Veracross or comparable Student Information Systems (SIS)
    • Mosyle MDM or similar mobile/device management tools
    • Unifi Network infrastructure (switching, wireless, monitoring)
    • PaperCut print management and access controls
    • Virtualization platforms such as VMware ESXi
  • Strong working knowledge of device ecosystems including:
    • macOS
    • iOS/iPadOS
    • ChromeOS
  • Server and systems experience across:
    • Linux environments
    • Cloud and hybrid infrastructure models

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in K–12 independent schools or educational environments.
  • Familiarity with student device programs and instructional technology ecosystems.
  • Ability to evaluate and implement emerging technologies (including AI) thoughtfully, ethically, and securely.

Working Conditions

This is an on-campus leadership role; occasional evening/weekend work may be required during critical maintenance or urgent incidents.
