Position: Instrumental Wind Band Teacher, Senior School

Term/Status: Full-time, four-month contract (leave of absence cover)

Contract Period: September 1, 2026 to December 18, 2026

Department: Music, Senior School

Reports to: Principal, Senior School

Salary: $75,523 to $123,078*     

    *The annual salary range will be updated with the 2026/27 salary grid and will be pro-rated for the contract term.

Position Overview:

St. George’s School has an opportunity for a passionate, talented, and enthusiastic teacher to join the Music Department at the Senior School. This role will cover an employee taking a four-month leave of absence.

The Band Program at St. George’s is a performance-oriented program and is recognized as one of the leading music departments in the country. At the Senior School there are four large performing ensembles, two jazz ensembles, and numerous small ensembles that participate in both local and international tours, performances, and festivals. We are a progressive and innovative department that embraces 21st century learning in the classroom and seeks to provide the best possible music education to our students while striving for excellence in performance.

Faculty are required to support the school’s co-curricular program, as well as the advisory program.  Typical co-curricular music options have included an Evening Wind Ensemble (8-12); Jazz combos; Improvisation club; or coaching a chamber ensemble.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Co-direct the Senior Concert Band (Grades 10-12); direct the Intermediate Concert Band (Grade 9); option to assist or co-direct a non-timetable Jazz Ensemble course.
  • Conduct full band lunch rehearsals.
  • Run sectional rehearsals.
  • Prepare repertoire, method books, and other curricular and co-curricular materials.
  • Implement and use a variety of innovative teaching techniques that align with 21st century learning at all grade levels.
  • Proactively create and contribute to a school culture that is optimistic, solution-focused, and dynamic.
  • Prepare for and participate in performances.
  • Work collaboratively within a dynamic, progressive cross-campus music department. 
  • Acts as an advisor to a small group of students at the Senior School.  

 

Qualifications:

  • Valid BC Teaching Certificate, or maintains the ability to obtain one.
  • Undergraduate degree in Music Education / Performance.
  • Highly competent and knowledgeable on all band instruments and possesses a high-performance level on at least one.
  • A skilled conductor of large and small ensembles with an exceptional level of musicality.
  • Experience in teaching/performing a wide variety of music styles including jazz, classical, and contemporary.
  • A passionate professional who will support the Music Department on the continuum of maintaining and improving teaching and learning standards.
  • Experienced in bringing a diversity of voices and worldviews to classroom material and learning experiences, including Indigenous, local, and global perspectives.
  • Strong classroom management abilities.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Collaborative team player with excellent interpersonal skills, with a particular emphasis on collaborative planning and assessment.
  • Superior skills in knowledge of curriculum, teaching and learning, specifically when planning educational strategies. 
  • Strongly committed to student learning and success; being able to understand the needs of students while engaging them as active learners in the classroom.
  • Dynamic and energetic individual who wishes to work in a highly focused environment with students keen to succeed. 
  • Superior EQ skills in self-awareness, self-management, social agility, impact and influence.
