About the position:
We are seeking a dedicated and organized Learning Strategies Specialist to join our team. In this role, you will work closely with students in both one-on-one and small group settings, primarily supporting students from Grades 8 to 12, including Grade 12 Math courses. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of neurodiversity and autism spectrum disorder, and the experience necessary to support students with diverse learning needs. A key aspect of this role involves fostering the development of executive function skills, which are essential for student success.
Role and Responsibilities:
The individual will be part of the Learning Strategies Program and will work closely with the guidance of the Learning Strategies Coordinator. This individual will be required to support students in managing organizational strategies, completing school work, studying, and communicating with teachers, parents, and the Strategies Team. This staff member will help ensure that the student is using time effectively at school, breaking down assignments into small steps, explaining complex vocabulary, identifying aspects that are too challenging for the student, and creating timelines with the student to ensure work is completed on time.
The successful candidate will be expected to work both independently and collaboratively, will report to the Learning Strategies Coordinator, and will have responsibilities that include (but not limited to):
- Communicating clearly with staff, students, and parents in person and by email
- The use of multiple approaches to teaching and supporting diverse learners
- The use of a calm and respectful demeanor that fosters positive engagement with students who have social-emotional challenges or developmental disorders
- Demonstrate professional value in diversity as it relates to all people, including aspects of identity, as well as having respect for Indigenous traditions and ways of knowing
- Support the student with organization and planning strategies to complete schoolwork
- Comfortable working on various computer platforms used in the school (Google Classroom, Google Drive, email, etc)
- Track student progress
Requirements for the position:
- Relevant Bachelor’s degree
- Demonstrated competence in Grade 12 Math
- At the time of application, you must be legally permitted to work in Canada
