Position Overview:

The Interim Head of Student Health provides strategic leadership and clinical oversight for St. George’s School’s cross campus Health Office, serving over 1200 students, and over 270 staff.

This role combines direct student care with team leadership, policy implementation, and cross-functional collaboration to ensure a safe, responsive, and student-centred health service aligned with the school’s mission and values. Reporting to the Vice-Principal (Student Wellness), the Interim Head of Student Health manages a team of Registered Nurses and plays a key role in promoting student well-being, health education, and risk management within a dynamic independent school environment.

This is a one-year interim appointment, ideal for an experienced Registered Nurse with demonstrated leadership capacity and interest in school-based health systems.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Leadership & Student Care

  • Provide high-quality, student-centred nursing care to Senior School students during school hours, as well before and after school as needed.
  • Serve as the senior clinical decision-maker for student health matters, including acute care, chronic condition management, medication administration, and emergency response.
  • Ensure appropriate documentation, confidentiality, and compliance with professional nursing standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead health response planning for injuries, illnesses, and school-based emergencies.

Team Leadership & Management

  • Lead, supervise, mentor and evaluate a team of Registered Nurses to deliver care in Boarding and both Senior and Junior campuses.
  • Coordinate staffing schedules, coverage, and workflow to ensure consistent service delivery.
  • Foster a collaborative, professional, and student-focused team culture.
  • Support and coordinate health related training and professional development opportunities.

Operational Oversight

  • Oversee daily operations of the Health Office, including adequate staffing, protocols, supplies, equipment, and space utilization.
  • Ensure accurate health records, medication tracking, and incident reporting systems.
  • Contribute to budget awareness, inventory management, and resource planning.
  • Implement and uphold school health policies and procedures.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with Counselling, Learning Support, Athletics, Boarding, and Senior Leadership to support whole-student wellness.
  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student health concerns, within professional and ethical boundaries.
  • Serve as a trusted health resource for faculty and staff.
  • Participate in relevant school committees and wellness initiatives.
  • Collaborates with key stakeholders in the provision of health services – School physician, Vancouver Coastal Health and other allied health care members.

Health Promotion & Risk Management

  • Support proactive health education initiatives and student well-being programming.
  • Contribute to school-wide risk assessment and mitigation related to student health.
  • Assist in policy review related to communicable disease management, concussion protocols, allergies, and medical accommodations.
  • Alert school administration and public health in the event of communicable disease outbreaks.
  • Participate in and support the Health and Safety Committee to deliver work related injury and illness prevention strategies.

 

Qualifications:

  • Current registration and good standing as a Registered Nurse (RN) with the BCCNM.
  • Minimum 5 years of clinical nursing experience.
  • Preference for candidates with leadership or supervisory experience and demonstrated ability to lead and manage a professional team.
  • Emergency, pediatric, adolescent, public health or community health experience.
  • Experience in an education setting.
  • Strong clinical judgment, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, student-centred educational environment.
  • Experience managing a budget and meeting accounting deadlines is considered an asset.
