Job Posting: Custodian for King David High School

Part-time: 20 hours per week

The Position:

We are looking for a conscientious, kind, dependable, flexible and friendly person. The successful applicant will treat others with kindness and respect and will be an important and cared for member of our school staff. The Custodian will work closely with the Head Custodian, the custodial team and other school staff to ensure that we best meet our responsibilities to our students, families, staff and community.

 

Responsibilities:

This role is varied and requires an individual who is self-motivated and able to work on their own or as part of a team as needed to maintain and protect our facilities. The external and internal appearance of our building reflects on all of us. It is important for a custodian to be careful and thorough in working, cleaning and tidying the premises. In addition, due to the nature of furniture and equipment in a school, the successful applicant should be able to move tables, chairs and other materials as needed.

 

Attributes and Specific Duties

We are looking for a caring and welcoming personality to support the focus on the upkeep of our building. You must enjoy working with people and supporting our staff in all situations. You must be physically able to move heavy items as this role, at times, will require physical exertion. A keen eye for detail and a real interest and care for your work are essential.

  • Keeps building and property in clean and orderly condition.
  • Performs routine maintenance activities as well as regular cleaning including: sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, vacuuming, shoveling, dusting, polishing or other activities as required
  • Performs heavy cleaning duties as needed
  • Gathers and empties trash, recycling and compost
  • Scrubs, sanitizes, and restock supplies to restroom facilities and to other rooms as needed           
  • Follows procedures for the use of chemical cleaners to prevent damage to floors and fixtures
  • Knowledge of safe chemical use handling procedures for cleaning and for storage
  • Assembly or disassembly of furniture and equipment as required
  • Perform maintenance and minor repairs (replacing switches, fixing handles, minor leaks etc.)
  • Moving furniture, desks, chairs and other furniture and equipment
  • Report the need for repairs or additions to building operating systems
  • Secure facilities after operating hours by locking doors, closing windows and setting up the alarm
  • Other duties as assigned by the Head Custodian, Head of School or their designate from time to time

 

Role Requirements:

  • Proven experience as custodian in a similar role or with an attitude to do this work well
  • Knowledge of use and maintenance of industrial cleaning equipment and appliances
  • Knowledge of safe disposal of chemical liquids and other hazardous components
  • Familiarity with basic landscaping and handyman practices
  • Attention to detail and conscientiousness
  • Very good physical condition and strength
  • Someone who, over time, wants to learn and grow so that they can take responsibility operating systems from heating to fire alarms to maintenance schedules
  • Successful completion of the Building Service Worker certification

The successful applicant must be able to work around young people who are part of the vulnerable sector and will have to undergo a criminal records check completed by the school and be currently eligible to work in Canada.
