Southpointe is seeking an enthusiastic, collaborative teacher who will design and deliver authentic Mandarin language instruction integrated to transdisciplinary PYP themes. Reporting to the Junior School Principal or designate, the Junior School Mandarin Language Teacher position will commence on August 27, 2026.

Program Development & Leadership

  • Lead the development and launch of a new Mandarin language program for the Junior School (K–5);
  • Establish a clear vision for Mandarin language learning that supports speakers who have some fluency, as well as novice learners.

Teaching and Learning

  • Plan and deliver engaging Mandarin instruction for students in Kindergarten through Grade 5;
  • Effectively differentiate instruction to meet the needs of fluent or native Mandarin speakers, as well as beginner and novice learners with no prior exposure;
  • Develop students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills using developmentally appropriate, inquiry-based approaches;
  • Integrate Mandarin language learning with transdisciplinary themes and PYP units of inquiry, where appropriate;
  • Foster student confidence in speaking and writing Mandarin in both structured and informal classroom contexts;
  • Create a classroom environment that is inclusive of all learners regardless of language proficiency.

Curriculum Development

  • Design, implement, and continuously refine a comprehensive Mandarin scope and sequence for the Junior School (K–5);
  • Align curriculum with IB PYP principles, language learning standards, and best practices in additional language acquisition;
  • Establish clear learning outcomes and proficiency benchmarks for multiple learner pathways;
  • Select, develop, and adapt instructional resources to support differentiated learning.

Assessment and Reporting

  • Design and implement ongoing formative and summative assessments for all students in Kindergarten through Grade 5 to measure progress;
  • Use a range of digital tools to collect evidence of learning, track student growth over time, and document achievement;
  • Provide individualized feedback and progress reports that clearly communicate each student’s strengths, areas for development, and next steps;
  • Prepare detailed, personalized report card comments and share learning growth with parents through conferences and digital portfolios.

Collaboration and Professional Engagement

  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, learning support staff, and administrators to support student learning and differentiation;
  • Participate actively in curriculum planning meetings, professional learning communities, and IB-related professional development;
  • Contribute to school-wide initiatives, events, and celebrations related to language and international-mindedness.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the school’s Co-Curricular and/or Athletic offerings two out of three terms;
  • Perform other teaching or supervisory duties, as assigned.

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor of Education or equivalent;
  • Certificate or coursework in Teaching Mandarin as a Second Language;
  • BC Ministry of Education: Certificate of Qualification or Independent School Teaching Certificate;
  • Preference may be given to teachers with at minimum 1-2 years of experience and those with PYP experience;
  • Valid First-Aid certificate.

Salary 

  • Southpointe’s teacher salary grid is currently at 6% above the Delta public school salary grid at all levels of the grid;
  • The current annual salary for a full-time teaching position at Southpointe Academy during the 2025-2026 school year ranges from $68,422 to $116,091 based on placement on the approved teacher salary grid;
  • The Southpointe salary grid will increase at a percentage to be determined for the 2026-2027 school year. 
    • Placement on the approved teacher salary grid is based on level of qualifications and duration of full-time teaching experience.
