DIRECTOR OF CAMPUS OPERATIONS
The Director of Campus Operations brings an enterprise approach to managing Shawnigan Lake School’s diverse functions. As a solution-oriented partner reporting to the CFOO, the Director leads the Operations Division in driving continuous improvement and ensuring all programs and events reflect the School’s high standards and shared values. By developing integrated operational strategies and policies, this role serves as a central pillar of the student and staff experience, aligning departmental projects with the School’s long-term objectives
Employment Type: Full-time, permanent. Office/campus-based position located on campus at 1975 Renfrew Road, Shawnigan Lake
Position Start Date: Ideal start date of May 2026. An earlier or later start may be considered.
Compensation: Annual salary range of $140,000 – $170,000. Starting salary is determined based on the successful candidate’s knowledge, experience, and internal parity.

JOB DESCRIPTION
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
As the leader of the Operations Division and reporting to the CFOO, the Director of Campus Operations contributes to the strategic direction of the School by developing and implementing operational strategy, policy, and processes, while planning and managing projects across departments.
Leadership & Change Management
- Communicate the operations vision of the School’s strategic plan to operations staff and divisional managers through continual dialogue, support, and constructive feedback.
- Lead through influence to bring others on board with new initiatives. Champion a culture of proactive problem-solving, empowering staff to identify operational hurdles and bring forward practical solutions.
- Encourage, coach, and inspire Operations staff to work together, support one another, and communicate effectively.
- Foster relationships with the School community and public services, including local law enforcement, first responders, VIHA, CVRD, and the Ministry of Environment.
- Chair the ‘Ops & Projects’ Committee and represent senior management on the Joint Occupational Safety & Health (JOSH) Committee.
Management & Operational Oversight
- Oversee the daily operations of the School and provide full accountability for operational strategies, policies, and processes for the entire division.
- Actively identify systemic issues or bottlenecks across departments and coordinate cross-functional teams to implement sustainable solutions.
- With support from the CFOO, develop, maintain, and communicate the annual Operations Plan and priorities to all stakeholders.
- Work with the CFOO, the Executive Director of Human Resources, and other senior leaders on critical processes, such as goal setting, workforce planning, and performance management. Collaborate with the External Programs Manager to ensure smooth operational support of all summer programs.
- Prepares and presents reports to the Senior Leadership Team and the Board of Governors’ Building Committee on Operations projects, issues, and results.
- Demonstrate managerial leadership with daily problem solving, crisis management, and emergency response planning.
Financial Management & Planning
- Collaborate closely with the Director of Finance to develop, track, and manage the annual divisional operating budget. Ensure fiscal responsibility by monitoring departmental spend against projections.
- With support from the CFOO, partner with the Director of Finance to plan and execute capital projects. Provide accurate cost projections and resource requirements for infrastructure improvements.
- Demonstrate fiscal leadership in procurement, staffing, and inventory management, ensuring alignment with the School’s financial policies.
Risk Management & Safety Compliance
- Partner proactively with the School’s designated Risk Manager to identify, assess, and mitigate operational risks across campus. Serve as the primary liaison for the Operations Division, ensuring that institutional risk strategies are practically implemented on the ground.
- Ensure all functional areas (Facilities, Transportation, Food Services, etc.) strictly adhere to School policies, as well as municipal, provincial, and federal regulations. This includes maintaining compliance with WorkSafeBC standards, building codes, and environmental regulations.
- Champion a “safety-first” culture by empowering staff to recognize hazards and report near-misses; collaboratively develop solutions with the Risk Manager to address these hazards before they result in incidents.
- Play a critical leadership role in the School’s emergency response planning and execution. Work with the Risk Manager to organize drills, maintain emergency supplies, and ensure all Operations staff are trained for crisis scenarios.
REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in an operations or related position, with a minimum of 5 years’ leadership experience at the senior operations level in a non-unionized workplace.
- A proven track record of bringing diverse teams together to solve complex problems. Ability to navigate resistance and influence positive change without relying solely on authority.
- A strong background in all major areas of operations management, demonstrated hands-on experience in the maintenance and upkeep of multiple types of buildings and supporting facilities. This includes a solid understanding of general construction and the supervision of consultants, trades, contractors, and service providers for both ongoing upkeep and the construction of new buildings from the ground up.
- Experience managing significant operating budgets and collaborating with finance teams on capital planning.
- A solid understanding of workplace compliance, including labour standards, building codes, environmental regulations and standards, and OHS regulations.
- Exceptional communicator, relationship builder, and visionary thinker with the ability to balance innovation, risk, and impact.
- Excellent organizational, team building, and problem-solving skills. Proficient with Google Workplace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides)
