Outdoor Education Teacher (Gr 1-7) Part Time – 0.8 FTE January 5, 2026 – June 25, 2026
Reporting to Junior School Principal and Senior School Principal, this position works collaboratively with the school’s faculty, and administration. This contract is 0.8 FTE, the successful applicant will work Tuesday-Friday commencing Jan 5, 2026 concluding June 25, 2026, with the possibility to extend for the 2026-2027 school year.
The Outdoor Education program at Brockton School is complementary to the academic program. The program offers students the opportunity to explore southwestern British Columbia’s varied landscapes; develop personal leadership skills; practice authentic collaboration and community building, and be safely introduced to a variety of healthy and lifelong outdoor pursuits unique to the North Shore, Lower Mainland, and Southwestern BC.
The Outdoor Education Teacher will be responsible for designing, and delivering outdoor education programming for students in Grades 1–7. This role involves creating engaging, age-appropriate learning experiences that foster exploration, environmental stewardship, and personal growth. Key responsibilities include curriculum planning and implementation, risk management, direct teaching of outdoor skills/activities, and supporting students in building confidence and collaboration in outdoor settings.
Requirements:
❏ BC Teacher Certification (Teachers Regulation Branch) in the form of a Certificate of Qualification (CoQ) or Independent School Teaching Certificate (ISTC)
❏ IB experience or training (preferred)
❏ Three to five years of professional work experience in the field of outdoor education
❏ Experienced and knowledgeable about local landscapes (has travelled/out-tripped in local spaces)
❏ Wilderness First Aid and CPR certifications;
❏ Additional guiding certifications are an asset: AST, SKGABC, Paddle Canada etc.
❏ Excellent written and oral communication skills
❏ High EQ skills, possess the ability to be self-aware
❏ Strong problem-solving, organizational, and administrative skills
❏ The ability to work independently and as a collaborative team player with excellent interpersonal skills
Ideal characteristics:
❏ Experience in teaching (or demonstrated ability to safely teach) Outdoor Education
❏ Experience in safely introducing to a variety of healthy and lifelong outdoor pursuits unique to the North Shore, Lower Mainland, and Southwestern BC
❏ Willingness to collaborate with colleagues to build Unit plans
❏ Class 4 Driver’s License an asset
Expectations include but are not limited to:
- Identify learning outcomes as they relate to OE delivery to Grades 1–7 by designing and adapting age-appropriate lessons and activities that integrate outdoor experiences with core curriculum areas
- Incorporate student reflection tools (e.g., journals, discussions, self-assessment) to deepen learning and track growth
- Participation on OE trips as needed
- Assist the OE Coordinator with activity and trip planning, as well as administrative functions, as needed, including budget tracking and communications related to the outdoor education program
- Assist in coordinating Grade 1-7 outdoor trips and activities by supporting tasks such as identifying destinations, securing permits, organizing transportation, ensuring safety and communication protocols, preparing group gear, collecting medical/health forms and waivers, planning and purchasing food supplies, and helping to organize groups and chaperones
- Collaborate with and assist Elementary teachers in planning and implementing class trips connected to their classroom units, including co-planning and/or teaching lessons in advance of trips when requested
- Brings different perspectives, voices, and worldviews to the classroom learning experience, including those of Indigenous, local, and global populations
- Promotes a safe and inclusive environment through strong relationship building and classroom management
- Organizes curriculum mapping and lesson planning (using the tool Toddle or other)
- Fosters a love of learning and an environment that encourages all students to develop and fulfill their academic potential
- Tracks assessment and feedback through use of formative and summative methods, includes student reflections and voice when targeting growth and development
- Attends staff meetings, professional development opportunities, and serves on committees as required
- Involves self in extended day programming activities
- Models behaviours, attitudes, and principals for students in all contexts
- Other duties as assigned by the divisional Principal
Salary Range: Brockton Faculty Salary Grid
2025-26 Example – For TQS Category 5 0.8 FTE (Step 0) $52,162 to $85,735 (Step 10) per annum
