Aberdeen Hall provides

  • Competitive Compensation at an annual salary of $120,000 to $140,000, inclusive of vacation pay and commensurate with years of experience

Position Summary

The Director of Finance is an operational leader responsible for ensuring the effective management of the school’s financial and human resources systems. Reporting directly to the Head of School, the Director of Finance provides oversight, analysis, and compliance assurance across all financial and HR operations. As a key member of the Leadership Team, the Director of Finance supports the Head of School and Directors in implementing initiatives that align with Aberdeen Hall’s mission, values, and strategic goals.

Key Accountabilities

Financial Leadership & Management

  • Work with the Head of School and other Leaders to develop and implement long-term financial strategies.
  • Provide accurate, timely financial reporting and analysis to inform decision-making.
  • Oversee tuition revenue, cash flow, and capital project financing to ensure financial stability.
  • Maintain strong relationships with banks, auditors, and external financial partners.

Human Resources & Organizational Development

  • Oversee and support the full recruitment, onboarding, and offboarding process.
  • Serve as one of the HR points of contact for employee relations matters, including investigations into grievances and disciplinary issues.
  • Administer compensation, benefits, and pension programs, ensuring compliance with employment standards and human rights legislation.
  • Work with the Business Team to develop and deliver hands-on HR training for managers and staff, manage the performance review cycle, and support the Head of School with succession planning and policy implementation.
  • Promote staff engagement, professional development, and a positive workplace culture aligned with school values.

Risk Management & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with ASPE (Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises), CRA charitable receipting, and other applicable regulations.
  • Develop and maintain internal controls to reduce financial and HR risks.
    Execute and maintain all necessary HR documentation and records to meet legal and audit requirements.
  • Oversee compliance with government reporting, insurance, and employee-related legislation.
  • Ensure privacy, data protection, and security within finance and HR Information Systems (HRIS).

Governance Support

  • Provide clear and timely reports, forecasts, and analyses to the Head of School for the Board of Directors’ materials.
  • Implement Board-approved financial and HR policies.
  • Prepare background analysis and documentation to support governance processes.

Success Factors

  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation required.
  • Training or certification in human resources leadership is an asset.
  • Preferred 2-5 years of leadership experience in finance and HR, ideally in the independent school or nonprofit sector.
  • Proven ability to manage budgets, audits, payroll, benefits, and compliance programs.
  • Experience in policy implementation, employee relations, and HR program administration.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to effectively manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills to support the Head of School and collaborate effectively with all internal and external partners.
  • Models the highest standards of integrity, discretion, and professional practice.
  • Utilizes strong analytical skills to deliver evidence-based recommendations.
  • Fosters a culture of teamwork and mutual respect by applying empathy, fairness, and cultural awareness in employee relations and cross-departmental collaboration.
