Overview: Aspengrove School 
Aspengrove School, a co-educational JK-12 International Baccalaureate (IB) Continuum School, is situated on 40 forested acres, just north of Nanaimo, BC, on Vancouver Island. Founded in 2003 by a group of spirited, committed and entrepreneurial leaders, from its beginnings Aspengrove has been dedicated to excellence in education, community engagement and strategic growth and development. 
Aspengrove’s mission is to challenge and inspire each and every member of its community to act with purpose as compassionate, knowledgeable and principled global citizens. Our commitment to this mission calls us to create a teaching and learning environment that is transformational. 
How do we do this? We encourage students to be curious through the learning process. We lead students to construct knowledge through inquiry. We teach students to reflect, to take risks, and to be open minded, through critical thinking and creative problem solving. We engage teachers who are experts in their subject area and passionate about working with young people. We encourage teachers who are committed to and understand the journey of inquiry. We honour teachers who share and deliver on our purpose. In short, we create a school culture--from students and their parents, to teachers and the leadership team--that fosters the very best in everyone. Aspengrove School is currently in the third year of its strategic plan, “Building on Success: Strategic Plan 2017-2027.” Over the plan’s ten years, Aspengrove will build on the growth undertaken since its founding, to provide a teaching and learning environment that is grounded in excellence and innovation. To achieve this, we have committed to three strategic priorities: Innovation in Teaching and Learning, Healthy Bodies and Healthy Minds, and Strength and Permanence. These priorities are aligned with three ambitious strategic goals:

The Position: Principal, Middle and Senior School
Aspengrove School’s faculty and staff, parents, and students are excited to welcome a dynamic educator to join our community as the Principal of the Middle and Senior School.  This is a 1.0 FTE position with a start date of August 15, 2020.
The Principal of the Middle and Senior School reports to the Head of School and works collaboratively with the Senior Leadership Team to ensure the School’s faithful commitment to and delivery of its Vision, Mission, and Values, and the steady advancement of “Building on Success: Strategic Plan 2017-2027.” 
Working with the Head of School and the Principal of the Primary School, the Principal of the Middle and Senior School plays an integral role in defining and fostering a positive school culture for faculty, staff, students and families. Essential to guaranteeing the integrity of the culture, the two Principals work collaboratively with the Head of School to align practices, decision-making and day to day operations across divisions. 
The Principal of the Senior and Middle School provides direct leadership for two divisions, the Middle Years (grades 6-10) and the Senior Years (grades 11 and 12), which includes a student population of approximately 150 students and a teaching faculty of 20. The Principal works with the Director of Academics, IB Diploma Program Coordinator, IB Middle Years Coordinator, Director of Athletics, Director of the Student Resource Centre and teaching faculty to define, guide and support program development, teacher growth and student success. Responsible for day to day operations of the two divisions, the Principal of the Senior and Middle School communicates with all constituents regarding calendar events, practices and policies.
The Principal of the Senior and Middle School is a valued leader in the community and makes a significant contribution to the present experience and future development of Aspengrove School.

The Principal of the Senior and Middle School is a person of integrity with the capacity to lead others. The ideal candidate leads, first by example, and then by clear communication, intentional decision-making, collaborative problem-solving, and strategic thinking. They are open-minded, respectful and thoughtful in the execution of their responsibilities and in their relationships with all members of the community. They have a demonstrated history of successful leadership in an academic environment at the high school level.
The Principal of the Senior and Middle School is a passionate, experienced educator, deeply committed to excellence in teaching and learning. The ideal candidate exemplifies this commitment in their leadership: it informs their engagement with teachers, students and families; it guides their leadership of program research, development and implementation; it defines their relationship with the broader educational community. They embrace lifelong learning and pursue professional opportunities to remain current regarding best practices in teaching and learning. 
The Principal of the Senior and Middle School is a knowledgeable IB leader and practitioner. Aligned with the principles and practices of the IB, the ideal candidate effectively articulates the value of an IB education for teachers, students and families. They understand and have experience with the IB Middle Years and Diploma Programs, and the requirements for Coordinators and teachers in its successful implementation. They have IB teaching experience.
The Principal of the Senior and Middle School is committed to student success and understands that educating the whole child requires attending to all facets of a student’s development -- intellectual, physical, relational, emotional. The ideal candidate has experience working with a broad range of students, providing guidance and support, coaching and direction, to ensure the greatest possible personal growth and development for each student. They understand the importance of working collaboratively with teachers and parents to create a transformational educational experience for students. 
The Principal of the Senior and Middle School is an effective team-builder. The ideal candidate enjoys working with teachers, school leaders and staff in a positive educational environment that is defined by clarity of purpose, creativity, flexibility and mutual  support, and where shared, common goals define both day to day interactions and responsibilities, and long range planning. 
The Principal of the Senior and Middle School provides day to day operational leadership of programs and activities for grades 6-12. The ideal candidate is skilled at communication, organization, scheduling, problem-solving, planning and time management. They are self-directed and independent, and committed to shared decision-making in a small but complex school environment. 

  • BC Teacher Certification or equivalent
  • Advanced degree in education, educational leadership or an academic discipline
  • 10 years of teaching experience in middle and/or senior years education, including delivery of the IB
  • 5 years leadership experience in middle and/or senior years education
  • Knowledge of the IB MYP and DP curriculum and the BC curriculum
