Kenneth Gordon Maplewood School (KGMS) is an Independent, co-educational K-12 school. One of a few dedicated Special Education Schools in BC, KGMS draws students from across the Lower Mainland. We follow the BC Ministry of Education curriculum while adapting and differentiating instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners. Using Universal Design for Learning principles, KGMS incorporates Experiential Learning, Inquiry, and Social-Emotional Learning to deliver a comprehensive educational experience. KGMS educators work in collaborative and dynamic instructional teams to implement responsive Individualized Educational Plans.
KGMS is seeking an energetic, positive and collaborative Inclusive Educational Assistant who will work to support highly personalized student learning. This role plays a key part in fostering an inclusive, supportive, and engaging learning environment where every student thrives academically, socially, and emotionally. Diverse learning needs at KGMS may include students who have physical, socio-emotional, health, or sensory needs in addition to learning stretches and strengths. The EA will work under the direction of teachers and specialty services staff to provide individualized and small-group assistance to students.
The Inclusive Educational Assistance will facilitate student self-regulation and social skill development, front-load, reinforce and extend academic learning, support the implementation of behaviour plans, and facilitate growing independence. Responsibilities will include assisting students with academic tasks, social-emotional development, and daily routines both in and outside the classroom, including recess, lunch and out trips. The ideal candidate will be patient, empathetic, flexible, and possess a genuine passion for working with Kindergarten to grade 9 learners. As a KGMS educator, the EA will contribute to the warm and nurturing culture of the school, and help ensure that all students experience success and belonging within our community.
Reporting to the Principal, this is a full-time position and continues to the end of the 2025-26 school year. May include both Junior (K to 6) and Middle School (Grades 7-9) work. Opportunities for ongoing employment may be available following the completion of the initial term.
Qualifications:
- Canadian residency and be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Certification, training and/or experience in an Education/Special Education setting
- Fluent communication skills in English, both oral and written, with students, colleagues, families, caregivers, and external service providers
- Strong organizational, communication, administrative and interpersonal skills
- Experience, education and training in the support of neuro-diverse learners
- Strong knowledge of child development and commitment to experiential learning
- Strong knowledge of student regulation and management strategies
- Knowledge of culturally responsive and trauma-informed practices
- Brings different perspectives, voices, and worldviews to the classroom learning experience, including those of Indigenous, local, and global populations
- Ability to successfully support and engage in land-based education and field trips of mild to moderate physical intensity
- Occupational First Aid training is an asset in support of school emergency procedures
Salary and benefits are paid as per the BCGEU collective agreement.
$53,890.55 – $60,707.31- Depending on education and experience
