The Position:
The Junior School (Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5) is a dynamic and joyful community of learners who create a culture of excellence, think critically and creatively, and are nurtured through supportive relationships in order to reach each child’s potential. Our teaching practice is inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, project and inquiry-based learning, and brain research.
We are currently seeking a Learning Resource Teacher to become part of our highly engaged, progressive, and professional faculty, who will fully embrace the SMUS vision and mission and share our educational philosophy and image of the child.
Responsibilities include:
Creating, implementing and maintaining documentation required by the Ministry of Education to support students with exceptionalities.
Creating and implementing educationally-sound learning support interventions and programming.
Working with the Junior School faculty to development of teacher capacity with identified learners within the classroom.
The successful candidate will have the following skills, background and interest:
A Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree, preferably with a specialisation in Special Education, Educational Psychology, or equivalent.
Current BC teaching certificate.
Successful classroom teaching experience, preferably in elementary education.
Familiarity with the new British Columbia Curriculum and Independent School experience is an asset.
Post-secondary coursework in the areas of students with special needs, assessment/testing theory and practice, and strategies for adapting and modifying curriculum to meet the diverse needs of students.
Post-secondary coursework in the areas of teaching students with specific needs, computer technology for the classroom, and meeting the diverse behavioural and emotional needs of students is an asset.
Experience delivering targeted intervention in the areas of numeracy and literacy.
Proficiency in applying current best practices related to differentiation and individualised learning strategies to meet the needs of all learners.
Experience writing Individualised Education Plans (IEPs), overseeing the IEP process, following up with a success plan for student learning and communicating with parents throughout this process.
Level B testing qualifications, experience conducting individual and small group assessments, and the ability to interpret data to develop support plans.
Qualifications and related experience in implementing and supporting an Orton-Gillingham based approach to reading.
Familiarity with the Response to Intervention philosophy.
Ensuring consistent and regular communication with families and Junior School faculty.
Experience using assistive technology as a tool to support learning (including Google Classroom and programs such as Read & Write).
A passion for ongoing learning and professional development.

Excellent organisational and time management skills.
Salary:
Hourly Pay Range: $38.12 – $61.69.
Criminal Record Check:
Must pass and maintain a clear Solicitor General criminal record check for the purpose of working with children.
