Maintenance Worker  
Temporary position, starting April 2024 
 
St. Michaels University School (SMUS) is seeking a Maintenance Worker to join our dynamic maintenance department. Reporting to the Building and Grounds Manager, the Maintenance Worker is responsible for general maintenance and repairs of SMUS’s buildings across all campuses. This position is part of a team of four maintenance workers and works alongside the Grounds and Security teams. Initially, this position will cover a leave with a regular work schedule, which may transition to more casual, on-call hours upon return of the incumbent. 
 
Work Schedule: 
Hours of work are generally Monday to Friday from 8.00 am – 4.00 pm. Work is physical and may include work outdoors during inclement weather. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Installs, maintains and repairs structures; builds and installs cabinets, partitions, and shelves; repairs furniture and equipment. 
  • Performs minor plumbing maintenance and repairs, and carpentry and electrical repairs not requiring a trade certification. 
  • Paints building interiors and exteriors, furniture, cement, and other materials. 
  • Ensures all work areas and repair sites are clean. 
  • Operates and maintain power and hand tools. 
  • Follow and adhere to appropriate safety standards. 
  • Assists in set up and take downs for school events. 
  • Other duties as required. 

The successful candidate will have the following skills, background and interest:

  • Minimum of high school diploma required, along with five years’ related experience. 
  • Knowledge of the technical aspects of plumbing, carpentry, electrical systems etc. 
  • Knowledge of building maintenance and general building trades. 
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications. 
  • Exercise sound judgment and able to work independently with minimal supervision. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and the school community. 
  • Works well in a team environment. 
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects and meet established timelines. 
  • Sufficient physical strength and stamina to perform the required duties. 
  • Valid B.C. Drivers Licence (Class 5). 
  • Current Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) certificate required. 
  • Experience working in a school environment and First aid/CPR certificate would be assets. 

Pay Range:  
Hourly pay range: $32.87 – $38.65. 

Criminal Record Check: 
Must pass and maintain a clear Solicitor General criminal record check for the purpose of working with children.
