Salary: $25 per hour

The Head Lifeguard will provide administrative support to the Head of Aquatics with the day to day operations of the pool, lifeguard schedules and communications with user groups, as needed.

The Head Lifeguard sets the bar for the Aquatics Department staff for professionalism, presence, and friendliness while on-duty in front of internal programs, all Saints staff, guests and visitors to the pool including external rental groups.

The weekly schedule will be coordinated with the Head of Aquatics. Weekly Head Lifeguard hours are estimated at 6-10 hrs./week spread out over multiple days, and paid at the rate of $25 per hour.

The successful candidate will also have a regular lifeguard shift(s) throughout the week and will oversee the workplace conditions for our team of lifeguards. These shifts will be paid according to our regular lifeguard wage grid, which is based on qualifications/experience.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Manage and oversee the work conditions of the lifeguard staff:
    • Regular shift allocations and coverage needs – scheduling.
    • Submitting payroll information every two weeks.
    • Managing uniform and first aid inventory for facility and lifeguards.
    • Certification tracking for all lifeguards.
    • Managing Inservice training.
  • Take the lead for day to day pool operations including a regular shift plus allocated time for other duties during Summer Break (July & August).
  • On-call support for on-duty guards.
  • Be available for coverage, particularly during:
    • Peak times, i.e. Dec/April university exam periods.
    • Low staff availability, i.e. staff-shortages, extended illness.
    • Larger pool bookings, i.e. competitions.
  • Pool operations – assist Head of Aquatics with:
    • Program equipment inventory and maintenance.
    • Mechanical/chemical liaison with Saints maintenance/custodial staff, outside chemical company.
  • Take on regular guard shifts.
  • Ensuring the safety of swimmers and guests using the pool during all Junior and Senior School aquatics classes, practices, special sessions, staff swims, and user group rental bookings.
  • Performing all levels of first aid as needed from simple minor issues through to managing major emergencies.
  • Following Pool Operations and Safety manual guidelines. Performing and recording pool chemistry water tests. 

Qualifications will include:
Certifications:

  • NLS/CPR/SFA – mandatory
  • WHMIS – mandatory
  • LifeSaving Course Instructor training – desired
  • Pool Operator Level 1 or 2 – an asset

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of Lifeguarding experience in multiple facilities & locations desired.
  • Head, Lead or Supervisor role – desired.
  • Sound knowledge of the rules and regulations governing safety in an indoor aquatic facility.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle a variety of customer service situations in an aquatic facility.
  • Ability to make appropriate decisions in an emergency situation.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively.
  • Reliable and responsible, with proven ability to use good judgment.
  • Ideal candidate will enjoy working in a school environment.
  • Key competencies and EQ in the following areas: self-awareness, self-management, empathy, social expertness, initiative, and accountability.
