Position Purpose & Overview

St John’s School (SJS) is seeking an organized and motivated individual to support elements of our summer camps programme for children and youth, SJS Summer to Discover.

Under the direction of the Summer Camp Coordinator, the Summer Camp Assistant Coordinator (on a team of 3) will communicate and work cooperatively with participants, parents, and other programme staff, and will be responsible for various administrative and organizational tasks prior to and during camp programmes.

The programme runs for four weeks from June 17th to July 12th 2024. Ideal candidates will be available for the duration of the programme, as well as for planning and preparation from April 26th onward.

This position can accommodate remote work until the beginning of May, and will require primarily on-site work from May to July.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Interview candidates for summer camp leader positions.
  • Communicate by email with parents and families, responding to inquiries.
  • Order and distribute supplies and merchandise.
  • Support programme design and planning by camp leaders.
  • Organize and facilitate aspects of camp leader training.
  • Support camp leaders during programmes.
  • Supervise programme sign-in each morning of camp programme and interact directly with parents and campers upon arrival.

It should be understood that the activities, responsibilities and obligations of this position may be modified from time to time, through discussion between the direct supervisor and the employee, in order to effectively meet the requirements of the School. On rare occasions where there are urgent needs at the School, an employee may be assigned to temporarily backfill role(s) critical to the school’s operations and business continuity.

 

Reporting Structure

  • Department: Summer Camp
  • Reports to: Summer Camp Coordinator
  • Key Interactions:
    • Internal: Non-teaching employees, Payroll Administrator, facilities staff, summer camp leaders, and Summer Camp Coordinator.
    • External: Parents and participants.

 

Position Details

  • Temporary part-time and transition to full-time from June until July 2024.
  • Work location: On site (can accommodate remote work from until May).
  • Hourly pay rate of $26.33 per hour.
  • 4% vacation pay.

Expected Time Commitment

  • April 2024: 15-20 hours per week
  • May 2024: 15-20 hours per week
  • June 2024: 35-40 hours per week
  • July 2024: 35-40 hours per week

 

Required Qualifications and Key Skills

Education & Work Experience

  • 19 years of age or older.
  • Completion of grade 12 schooling.
  • Experience in recreation or a childcare setting(s).
  • Completion of satisfactory criminal record check for the vulnerable sector – children.
  • Completion of Emergency First Aid and CPR C Certification.

 

Qualities and Skills

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills necessary to establish rapport with children, families, and staff.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of organization.

 

Conditions of Employment

  • The successful candidate will be required to complete child abuse prevention training and  concussion training, provided by St. John’s School and provide consent for a criminal background check for the vulnerable sector.
  • The successful candidate will be required to provide a valid First Aid training certificate.
  • Clearance on criminal record check for vulnerable sector is a condition of employment.
  • Ability to legally work in Canada, in an educational setting is a condition of employment.
