Position Overview:

Kenneth Gordon Maplewood School (KGMS) would like to acknowledge and thank the Coast Salish peoples, including the territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and selíl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations on whose traditional territories we teach and learn.

KGMS is a Primary to Grade 12 co-educational Special Education School located in the Maplewood neighbourhood of North Vancouver. We provide specialized education that supports students with diverse learning needs. The leadership team works collaboratively to support approximately 180 students in grades 2 through 12, equally distributed in our Elementary, Middle and High School populations.

The Principal of the Elementary and Middle School will be responsible for providing leadership and direction to the school, ensuring that it operates effectively and efficiently, and delivering quality education to all students. The Principal should have experience in educational leadership, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and a proven track record of driving change and innovation. Supported by the Vice Principal, the Principal will manage the teaching staff in both Elementary and Middle school programs.

The Principal oversees the daily delivery of the educational program and plays a key role in curriculum planning and development, ensuring alignment with provincial educational standards. The Principal is responsible for overseeing curricular assessment, including student welfare student support services, counselling, and extracurricular activities. As a key member of the
Senior Leadership Team, they are responsible for creating a positive and supportive learning environment for students, families, faculty, and staff within their department.

Qualifications:

Valid BC Teaching Certification
Master’s degree preferred or alternately Post Graduate studies towards a Master’s degree
Knowledge of the BC K – 9 curriculum
Previous Leadership Experience
Knowledge of accreditation and compliance
Knowledge of provincial standards for academic achievement and student performance and familiarity with evidence-based practices in special education
Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
Commitment to continuous learning and professional development

Ability to think critically, analyze data, and develop strategic plans that align with the school’s mission, vision, and values in collaboration with the senior leadership team.

The ideal candidate should possess excellent written and oral communication skills. They must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, including staff, students, parents/guardians, and community members. Building positive relationships through effective communication strategies is essential to fostering an open and collaborative culture within the school community. This includes encouraging feedback, input, and participation from all members.

Leadership & Management:

Strong leadership skills, including the ability to inspire, motivate, and manage a team of professionals, and manage resources effectively, including budgets, personnel, technology and facilities.

Curriculum Development:

The Principal must be skilled in designing, developing, and implementing curricula that align with the school’s educational objectives and meet the needs of a diverse student population.

Student Engagement:

The Principal must possess the skills to create a positive and engaging learning
environment that fosters student success, well-being, and growth.

Collaborative Skills:

The Principal must be a skilled collaborator, able to work effectively with teachers, administrators, parents, and other community members to achieve the school’s objectives.

Continuous Improvement & Innovation:

A commitment to ongoing learning and growth, and a willingness to take risks,
experiment, and innovate by identifying and implementing best practices in education, curriculum design, assessment, and technology integration to enhance student learning. and engagement. Pay: $90,000.00 – $120,000.00 salary is negotiable based on education and experience.
