DIRECTOR OF SENIOR SCHOOL

York House is seeking an enthusiastic, experienced, and dynamic educational leader to continue the Senior School’s development as an integral part of the world-class, leading institution in girls’ education that York House School is known as. Experienced with high-level operational and strategic planning, the Director of Senior School is a skilled instructional leader who supports and engages all stakeholders in the implementation of the Senior School’s academic plan. With a demonstrated track record in administrative management and educational leadership, the Director of Senior School is experienced in addressing and resolving conflict and empowering a positive and inclusive school culture.

About This Role
Reporting to the Head of School, the Director of Senior School has the overall responsibility for leading and overseeing academic and co-curricular programs, and managing day-to-day operations of the Senior School (Grades 8 to 12). The Director of Senior School is proactive in ensuring academic excellence and consistency in all school programs and provides leadership and management of students and faculty so that the tone, environment, and culture model the values and mission of York House School. Additionally, the Director of Senior School will work closely with the Assistant Director of Senior School and the Director of Learning to support faculty with curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices aligned to the school’s strategic priorities.

Responsibilities

Leadership:

  • Working collaboratively with all stakeholders to foster a strong, supportive and connected school
  • Fostering meaningful and engaged relationships with all members of the school community
  • Building collective responsibility for the mission and values of the school
  • Communicating the vision, philosophy, and goals of the Senior School to all constituents
  • Ensuring that the vision and values of the school intentionally inform all decisions and practices
  • Ensuring the development of the whole child through school programs and activities academic, extra-curricular, student life, service learning, leadership development, and student learning support (academic and social/emotional development)
  • Providing school-wide instructional leadership
  • Working collaboratively with the administrative team to develop, lead and implement strategic priorities
  • Collaborating with other Directors to ensure consistency in expectations and programs across YHS
  • Supervising the Assistant Director of Senior School

Administrative and Operational Leadership:

  • Ensuring the smooth daily operations of the Senior School
  • Ensuring students and staff adhere to school policies, procedures, and expectations
  • Complying with requirements set by the Ministry of Education
  • Assisting with the hiring of teachers, including On Call teachers
  • Ensuring regular and effective communication with the school community
  • Attending school functions and events
  • Ensuring the coordination of co-curricular and extra-curricular programs, assemblies, and events
  • Maintaining student discipline in accordance with policy and philosophy of the school
  • Ensuring regular and effective communication with the school community
  • Ensuring that policies and procedures are annually reviewed and aligned to school mission and strategic priorities
  • Overseeing and approving Senior School excursions
  • Liaising with community organizations and outside agencies as needed

Teaching and Learning:

  • Staying abreast of the latest trends and educational research on 21st Century skills leadership and global competencies, as well as how girls learn best
  • Ensuring excellence in teaching and learning through the supervision of faculty and program development (curricular and co-curricular) for the Senior School
    Supporting teachers in matters of classroom, teaching methods, and general school procedures
  • Working with all academic directors to ensure consistency in programming across all grades
  • Working collaboratively with other Academic Directors to:
    – Ensure courses of study are revised annually and aligned to Ministry expectations
    – Lead, coach and manage faculty in the areas of curriculum design and development, ensure consistency in instructional and assessment practices
    – Empower inquiry-based learning experiences
    – Empower and support the work of collaborative learning teams
    – Ensure continuous professional learning through targeted professional development opportunities that are aligned to the strategic priorities
  • Planning and leading faculty and department heads’ meetings attend academic department meetings
  • Conducting faculty evaluations and supporting Professional Growth and Development Plans to ensure continuous professional growth and excellence in teaching practices
  • Working closely with the Director of Junior school for the transition from Junior to Senior School

Other Duties & Specific Tasks:

  • Responsible for academic operations in the Senior School: opening and closing procedures; report cards, parent-teacher interviews; final examinations and teacher invigilation schedule (liaison with University & Academics Counsellor); timetabling; managing course offerings; detention duty and traffic duty
  • Helping to coordinate the master school schedule by setting key dates for Senior School events and activities
  • Working with Department Heads in budgeting, planning, and decision making for facilities (space, furniture, supplies, and equipment)
  • Overseeing the Learning Strategies Department by meeting with the Learning Strategies Coordinator and members of the dept. (IEP meetings, Scheduling, etc.)
  • Working closely with the Senior School Counsellors, the University & Academics Counsellors and the Capstone & Career-Life Connections Coordinator to ensure the academic and emotional well-being of students (Grades 8 to 12), as well as course selection process (set timelines for course selection and course offerings)
  • Taking part in Learning Teams where possible
  • Working closely with the Assistant Director of School to coordinate Senior School assemblies
  • Working closely with TAG program lead and Assistant Director who oversees the student executive program
  • Acting as a member of various committees as necessary
  • Other duties as assigned

Experience:

  • A demonstrated track record of management, leadership, and achieving results in a school environment
  • Senior administrative experience, ideally earned in a progressive independent school
  • Experience with the accreditation process an asset
  • Experience in a unionized environment an asset
  • Demonstrated experience with the BC curriculum an asset

Credentials:

  • Principal’s Qualifications or CAIS Leadership Institute Diploma or equivalent
  • Bachelor of Education and a Master’s in Education is preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in progressive senior leadership roles in an educational school setting, coupled with a minimum of 10 years of teaching experience
  • Certification from the BC Ministry of Education or equivalent
  • Technology integration experience an asset
