We are seeking an experienced leader to become the Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) at our school (JK-12). Reporting to our Deputy Head, the ideal candidate will be a leader with creativity, courage, empathy and thoughtfulness, strength and wisdom, who can envision institutional change at the policy, cultural, interpersonal, and individual levels. This Director must be able to demonstrate sensitivity and care in working with staff, students, alumni and our broader school community. This is a Permanent Full-Time position that will start August 27, 2021.
• Through collaboration, lead the development and integration of equity, diversity and inclusion programs at the school.
• Refine, prioritize and carry out the initiatives identified in Collingwood’s EDI Action Plan.
• Partner with the various members of the Leadership Team to collaboratively envision and lead programmatic initiatives grounded in the work of social justice.
• Work closely with the Wentworth EDI teacher leader to ensure continuity in philosophy, programming and work in age appropriate ways across our entire school (JK-Grade 12)
• Envision, establish, and set direction for committees and affinity groups that have responsibility for carrying out equity, diversity, and inclusion work.
• Courageously and boldly identify markers for growth and development for all constituents in equity, belonging, and anti-racist work.
• Development of community partnerships that offer opportunities for innovative and experiential collaboration.
• Oversee the development of affinity and interest groups for faculty, staff and parents.
• Oversee EDI related student groups and coordinate monthly meetings with faculty advisors and assess the offerings and strategic mandates of each group.
• Strengthen student engagement, advocacy and leadership for EDI.
• Envision, design, and initiate appropriate points of engagement for our Primary, Intermediate and High School divisions.
• Collaborate with the Parent’s Council to engage the school community by means of public programs that enhance awareness and commitment to EDI work.
• Work with curriculum leaders and faculty across the JK-12 continuum to develop and promote comprehensively inclusive curriculum and learning that magnifies the need for all members of our community to be respected, lifted, and fully seen and heard.
• Teach EDI-focused classes, lessons and units across the School.
• Collaborate with colleagues – teachers, Learning Leaders, Heads of Department, Division heads, and student support personnel in ongoing efforts to embed principles and practice of equity and social justice in the school’s curriculum, pedagogy, and student life.
• Serve as a mentor and advocate for colleagues and design and deliver strong and effective professional development opportunities for all.
• Develop and lead training for employees on cultural competency as well as anti-bias and anti-racist practices.
• Collaborate and assist with the design and implementation of ongoing learning & development (e.g. training, events, workshops) to raise awareness and competency of stakeholders.
• Develop the vision for and lead an All-School Equity and Inclusion Committee.
• Coordinate the efforts of all colleagues, Board of Governors, Collingwood Families, and students in naming and confronting structural and systemic inequities as integral to our school’s mission.
• Gather, analyze and leverage data related to EDI surveys, demographics, etc.
• Support the development and implementation of policies, procedures and programs that sustain a diverse, equitable and inclusive school community.
• Ensure that the School’s practices and policies align with the EDI accreditation standards for CAIS.
• Communicate Collingwood’s vision for EDI through regular public presentations, workshops, and related articles published on the school website, podcasts, E-News, presentations, videos, and other suggested points of collaboration.
• Lead the School’s response to EDI related issues in the community as they arise.
• Present at conferences and/or leading workshops for other educators on topics and issues related to EDI and belonging.
• Maintain a strong awareness on social issues, staying current with leading EDI research and topics.
· A Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree preferred.
· 5 to 7 years’ experience working with (teaching, leading, facilitating) school aged students, ideally in a school setting, in EDI, and community engagement initiatives and projects.
· British Columbia Teacher Certification preferred.
· Deep knowledge of best practices in all issues related to EDI.
· Demonstrated leadership and coaching skills.
· A strong knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
· Self-starter with a strong bias for action and follow through.
· A highly adept and efficient decision maker and skilled communicator who seeks broad input and is known for transparency and collaboration.
· An ability to lead group discussions, mediate conflicts and find mutually beneficial solutions.
· Outstanding interpersonal and community-building skills; a good listener; accessible, patient, collaborative, flexible, resilient, tactful, self-confident, self-aware and joyful.
· Excellent communication skills (oral, written and presentation).
· Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
· A growth mindset, and a demonstrated commitment to receiving and acting on constructive feedback.
· The skillset and fortitude to balance the emotional demands of the role.
· A keen understanding of the dynamics of a large JK through 12 coeducational independent day school.
· A proven track record of being able to work effectively with students, faculty, administrators, and parents in work related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
