To help us take the steps that we need to, we are seeking the help and direction of someone experienced in this field of work. The Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DDEI) will report to the Head of School and collaborate closely with the other members of the school leadership team.
- Develop and lead the school’s diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice programs and policies, in close collaboration with the school’s Educational Leadership Team
- Work with curriculum leaders and faculty across the PK-12 continuum to promote inclusive and anti-racist curriculum and pedagogy
- Promote a student culture that empowers students to act as agents of positive change
- Lead in the implementation and development of initiatives and programs to enhance the experiences of students who are historically underrepresented and/or marginalized within independent school settings, including Canadian indigenous students
- Plan and/or lead professional learning for faculty and staff on issues relating to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice
- Work with the relevant departments to promote equitable practices in HR and Admissions
- Develop and deliver educational programming for families on issues related to the school’s DEI agenda
- Develop and implement a Strategic Action Plan for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and work with the school leadership teams to successfully implement the Whole School Strategic Plan
The ideal candidate will have:
- A demonstrated passion for PK-12 education, and issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Proven ability to lead discourse around aspects of identity including but not limited to race, culture, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, ability
- Understanding of current issues and discourse around Canadian indigenous peoples, including efforts to promote reconciliation, or a desire to learn and grow in this area
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to navigate challenging conversations with students, faculty, and families
- Genuine love of teamwork and collaboration
- Exceptional communication skills, including being an excellent listener, confident public speaker, and clear writer
- Well-developed skills in group facilitation, and familiarity with a range of facilitation methods and approaches
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills
- Ability to confidently use a variety of technological tools for effective communication and to enhance student learning
Knowledge and experience of:
- International Baccalaureate programmes and philosophy
- The context of international and/or independent schools
- Positive Education and social-emotional learning
- Be a Canadian resident and legally entitled to work in Canada, or be prepared, with the school’s support, to go through the process of obtaining an appropriate visa
- Be certified to teach in British Columbia, or meet all of the requirements to obtain certification from the BC Ministry of Education
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education
- An advanced degree in a relevant subject area, and/or formal DEI professional qualifications, training, or certification
- Have at least 5 years of professional experience in schools or related educational organizations
- Have previous formal responsibility for and experience with leading DEI initiatives in an educational setting
The salary range for this position will be $90,000 to $100,000 based on skills and experience. This position will also include health & dental benefits, tuition discount at Mulgrave and RRSP contribution. Applicants should either be Canadian and a provincially certified teacher or be prepared, with our support, to go through the process of applying for the appropriate visa and permissions from the Canadian and BC authorities prior to commencement.
