Health Centre Nurse 
Permanent, part-time position, starting September, 2024
St. Michaels University School (SMUS) is seeking a part-time Nurse to join our dynamic and high-functioning Health Centre department. Reporting to the Head Nurse, the Health Centre Nurse is part of a team that supports the day-to-day operations of the Health Centre, which attends to the clinical care of SMUS boarding students from Grades 8 to 12. 

Work Schedule: 
As a boarding school, we provide access to medical care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our Nurses work both day and evening shifts between the hours of 7:30 am and 9:30 pm on weekdays, weekends from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, and overnight as required to look after students. Some weekend, evening and on-call hours will be required. This role will work 23 hours per week in-clinic, during the school year. The school and health centre close for statutory holiday long weekends, winter break, spring break and summer break. 

Our preference is for 3 shifts a week (7.5 hours per shift), plus one on-call shift each week. There can be some flexibility concerning the exact schedule. The Nurse will start in the role in September with orientation in June and August.  

Responsibilities include:

  • Provides health care such as first aid treatment for minor ailments and injuries and administering medications.  
  • May be called upon to attend an injured or sick student.  
  • Refers students to the school doctor, liaises with outside medical specialties, therapists, dental, ophthalmic or other health related appointments for boarding students.  
  • Provides preventative health care, promotion of health and health awareness through seminars.  
  • Liaises with other health care professionals in the community.  
  • Refers students to the school counselors when appropriate.  
  • Performs administrative functions, such as maintaining emergency equipment, ordering supplies, maintaining electronic student files including medication needs, immunization records and allergy lists.  
  • Ability to work with digital medical records.  
  • Ability to be flexible as needs and shifts may change. 

Experience and Qualifications:

  • This position requires a current membership in good standing with the BC College of Nursing Professionals along with a minimum of two years’ experience in a related position. 
  • A Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing or a Licensed Practical Nursing diploma from an accredited post-secondary institution. 
  • Current CPR Level C certification. 
  • Adherence to the BC Standards for Nursing Practice. 
  • Proactive approach to preventative health care. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel). 
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written, with internal and external customers. 
  • Ability to be tactful, demonstrate excellent judgment, and work as a positive and collaborative team member. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, teachers, parents and staff. 
  • Ability to identify and assist students with emotional and other health concerns. 
  • Organized, with the ability to meet deadlines. 
  • Enthusiastic, energetic, a self-starter with the ability to work independently. 
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. 

Pay Range: 
Hourly pay range: BCNU RN3 $41.42 to $55.91 per hour. LPN1 $32.84 to $41.35 per hour.  
Criminal Record Check: 
Must pass and maintain a clear Solicitor General criminal record check for the purpose of working with children.
