The Position:

Reporting to the Head Nurse, the Casual Nurse may be required to cover day and evening shifts as needed and to be regularly on-call overnight and weekends, particularly Friday, Saturday and Sunday overnights.

As a Boarding school we provide access to medical care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Nurses work days and evenings between the hours of 7:30 am and 10:30 pm and overnight as required to look after students.  On-call nurses work outside of normal operating hours. When on-call, the nurse will be expected to answer phone calls from house parents for any health related concerns, and be available to arrive on campus within 20 minutes if needed to assess students.

The successful candidate will have the following skills, background and interest:

This position requires a current membership in good standing with the BC College of Nursing Professionals along with a minimum of two years’ experience in a related position
A Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing or a Licensed Practical Nursing diploma from an accredited post-secondary institution
Current CPR Level C certification
Adherence to the BC Standards for Nursing Practice
Proactive approach to preventative health care
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written, with internal and external customers
Ability to be tactful, demonstrate excellent judgment, and work as a positive and collaborative team member
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, teachers, parents and staff
Ability to identify and assist students with emotional and other health concerns
Organized, with the ability to meet deadlines
Enthusiastic, energetic, a self-starter with the ability to work independently
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Responsibilities include:

Available to answer phone calls from house parents for any health related concerns;
Use clinical judgement to determine course of care
May be called upon to attend an injured or sick student
When on-call, must be able to arrive on campus within 20 minutes if required
Available to stay overnight on campus providing care to student(s) if required
Provides health care duties such as first aid treatment for minor ailments and injuries and administering medications as needed
Ability to work with digital medical records
Document any relevant information for next nurse on duty
Under the direction of the Head Nurse:

Refers students to the school doctor, liaises with outside medical specialties, therapists, dental, ophthalmic or other health related appointments for boarding students
Provides preventative health care, promotion of health and health awareness through seminars
Liaises with other health care professionals in the community
Refers students to the school counselors when appropriate
Performs administrative functions, such as maintaining emergency equipment, ordering supplies, maintaining electronic student files including medication needs, immunization records, infirmary records, and allergy lists
Ability to be flexible as needs may change, resulting in changing shifts and hours of work
Criminal Record Check:

Must pass and maintain a clear Solicitor General criminal record check for the purpose of working with children.
