The SMUS Vision: To learn, to lead, to serve.
The SMUS Mission: Our school seeks the excellence in all of us, with passion and compassion. We are a community shaped by the pursuit of truth and goodness, providing outstanding preparation for life.
St. Michaels University School (SMUS) is an independent, not-for-profit, co-educational day (Grades K to 12) and boarding (Grades 8 to 12) school. There are approximately 1,030 students, one quarter of whom are senior Boarders; the balance are day students across Junior, Middle and Senior schools. SMUS is ideally located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada and has a global reputation for post-secondary preparation and character development. The diversity of our community is one of its strengths; as well as local Canadian students, we are proud to have students from as many as 30 countries in one of Canada’s top academic programs. Programming includes exceptional opportunities in athletics, arts, leadership, service and outdoor education.
SMUS is accredited by CAIS (Canadian Accredited Independent Schools) and is a member of TABS (The Association of Boarding Schools), NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools) and ISABC (Independent Schools Association of British Columbia). A strong differentiator for SMUS is the connections to a large number of Alumni, many of whom remain engaged and supportive today. Our Alumni include many well-respected and well-known individuals, who have gone from SMUS to have careers in medicine, technology, research, finance, law, professional athletics and the arts, to name a few.
At St. Michaels University School, we seek to employ and empower individuals who wish to forge impactful relationships and careers that place our students at the centre. We firmly believe that expanding our diversity while adjusting our practice will lead to becoming the community we envision – a place where staff and students share a sense that they fully belong

Last year the school raised, through donations, $2.7 million for a variety of projects. The targets for fundraising moving forward will be considerably more ambitious, driven by the new Strategic Plan and the launch of the Journey for Life Campaign.

The successful candidate will lead an existing Advancement Department, comprising administrative and database personnel, as well as Alumni Relations, Annual Appeal, Major Gift and Marketing and Communication staff. A track record of successfully leading major fundraising campaigns, managing a team, and previous communications and marketing experience will be viewed very favourably by the Search Committee. The Director of Advancement and Campaigns must demonstrate strong written and verbal communications skills, impactful interpersonal skills, as well as a working knowledge of relational database software and records management.
The successful applicant will model excellence in all aspects of their role, and successfully interact with school community members of all ages, positions and demographics.
