Crofton House School is seeking an experienced school counsellor to work in our Junior School. As an experienced, knowledgeable and qualified school counsellor you understand girls and the personal challenges they face as they navigate school from Grade 1 – 7. You bring a compassionate, therapeutic and culturally sensitive approach to personal counselling with an awareness of mental health and social and emotional development. Balanced with supporting students, you guide teachers in understanding personal challenges experienced by the students in their classes and guide them toward implementing strategies that ultimately support all learners.

You are an expert in your field and energized by what you do. Students, colleagues and parents find you to be approachable, available, knowledgeable, genuine and supportive. You demonstrate an understanding of the importance of parents as partners in their daughter’s education by maintaining open and collaborative relationships with the parent community. As a lifelong learner, you demonstrate a commitment to actively seek professional development, to continuously reflect on your practice and collaborate with your colleagues to maximise student learning. You participate actively in the life of the school.

This position reports to the Director of the Junior School, and works in close collaboration with a second counsellor, a Coordinator of SEL & Student Wellbeing and Junior School teachers and educators to support the range of student needs from Grade 1-7. You will find the school to be a professional learning centre. In addition to spending an engaging day with students who are genuinely interested in learning, thinking and playing, Crofton House School educators, teachers and leaders, are collaborative, inspiring, and dedicated to the profession of teaching and overall student wellbeing.

The start date is flexible based on the availability of the successful candidate.


Foster emotional and relational wellness in young girls within the school context
Provide individualised support for social and emotional challenges experienced by girls
Plan and deliver group classes to support pro-social behaviour
Work in partnership with educators and families to support students with a focus on school success
Act as a resource for educators and parents to support girls
Work in collaboration as a team in a dynamic Student Services Centre with an additional counsellor and learning resource support teachers
Maintain documentation and records for individual students, ensuring confidentiality in reporting
Establish annual professional goals
Participate in school meetings and events, including school planning and professional development
Be an active and positive participant in the life of the school

Qualifications, Knowledge, Experience:

Masters Degree in counselling psychology, educational counselling, social work or equivalent
3 to 5 years of experience working with children in a counselling and/or educational setting
Registered with a professional organisation at a provincial or national level
Working knowledge and demonstrated proficiency regarding ethics of practice
B.C. Ministry of Education Certificate or Independent School Certification qualification criteria an asset
A demonstrable awareness of the development and current issues of girls and young women
Excellent interpersonal, communication, problem-solving, negotiation and mediation skills
A commitment toward continued professional development and growth
Energy, commitment and a readiness to participate in the diverse life of the school community
Proven ability to work with a multidisciplinary, team-based approach
Proven ability to work successfully in a culturally diverse environment (strong intercultural skills)
Ability to speak a second language an asset
