This position requires a passion for design, strong organizational skills and a genuine interest in assisting young people in learning about design and prototyping.

A primary responsibility will be to manage two design spaces (Ideation Lab and Fabrication Lab) ensuring that they are organized, well maintained, and fully stocked at all times. This requires creativity and energy as well as an ability to take initiative and demonstrate leadership. As this position requires working with teachers from various disciplines and grade levels in supporting the learning process, teachers and students, being approachable, knowledgeable, genuine and supportive are key attributes.

Works as an ideas person, a facilitator and a mentor. Is a creative and innovative design thinker, who sees possibilities within the curriculum that offers opportunities to a student to develop her ideas and learning through design thinking processes. Works collaboratively with teachers of all grades and disciplines in the planning and implementation of student engagement in the design process. Takes the initiative to bring classes into the spaces and is able to build connections and assist all teachers in taking advantage of this space. Optimizes the use of the technology, materials and equipment available to students and teachers. Ensures the spaces used (Ideation Lab and Fabrication Lab) are organized, well maintained and fully stocked at all times.

A lifelong learner, who demonstrates a commitment to actively seek professional development. Participates actively in the life of the school.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities:

Be familiar with the of BC Ministry of Education Curriculum
Be knowledgeable of Crofton House School’s Education Plan regarding its focus on inquiry, collaborative and student-centered education
Teach sections within our AADST Department, such as ICT, Engineering, etc, as needed by the department
Create opportunities for developing students’ design-thinking competencies
Integrate design thinking principles across departments
Build relationships with teachers and students
Work collaboratively with teachers to support curriculum-related teaching and learning in these spaces
Create and manage co-curricular opportunities for effective use of the space, such as creating and programming workshops, open hours, and activities related to special events
Lead student and teacher workshops, including teaching use of technology, design-thinking, and technical skills
Showcase student work in collaboration with teachersOversee and maintain makerspaces: The Ideation Space and The Fabrication Lab: Manage and oversee equipment in the makerspaces, including safety and training protocols
Order, sort and display non-consumable and consumable materials
Create, implement and oversee a long-term vision for development of the space and related programs
Work under the guidance of the Senior School administration and actively collaborate with Department Heads
Other duties assigned as required

Qualifications, Knowledge, Experience

Bachelor of Education Degree or Independent School’s Certification
Expertise in the design-thinking process and/or relevant technical/industry training
Knowledge of makerspace fabrication materials, tools and technology such as 3D printing and laser cutter
Technologically proficient, including knowledge of 2D & 3D digital file preparation
Experience managing digital portfolios
Experience working with children at a secondary level is an asset
Growth mindset, commitment to learning new skills
Ability to work in a fast-paced, complex environment
Experience working in a makerspace an asset
Ability to work as part of a team
Excellent communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills A genuine interest in assisting young people in learning about design and prototyping
