Position Rationale and Goal
The PYP Coordinator and Teacher dual role supports the needs of faculty and students in the Junior School. The PYP Coordinator and Teacher serves as an instructional and pastoral leader in the Junior School, earning the respect and confidence of the community. The PYP Coordinator and Teacher possesses a thorough understanding of the BC curriculum and how to implement it through the framework of the Primary Years Programme. Additionally, the PYP Coordinator and Teacher uses the Standards and Practices of the IBO as a guide for supporting teaching and learning in the Junior School, and provides for continuum collaborations with the MYP and DP Coordinators.
The PYP Coordinator reports to and is evaluated annually by the Junior School Principal on objectives established jointly.

A university degree with a teaching emphasis in a relevant field or completion of a teacher preparation program.

Eligibility for BC teacher certification prior to starting in the role.

5+ years of total educational experience.

Key Responsibilities: Primary Years Programme Coordinator
-
Assist with the evaluation and development of the overall school program to meet the rigorous standards of the BC Ministry of Education and the International Baccalaureate programme.
-
Serve as a pedagogical leader in assisting teachers to develop best teaching and learning practices in inquiry-based teaching, including new and innovative strategies, to support student success.
-
Ensure all incoming teachers, or those teaching in a new role within the school, are fully familiar with the PYP, the Programme of Inquiry and BC curricular expectations for their grade and subject area.

Monitor and assess units of inquiry as they are developed, and be aware of current curriculum developments.
-
Provide support and feedback to teachers on teaching practices, use of rubrics, and systems for progress reports.
-
Guide teachers through a yearly programme review, ensuring horizontal and vertical alignment.

Support teacher and student development in the understanding and integration of the Approaches to Learning Skills.

Collaborate with teachers on subject curriculum documents.
-
Support teachers with Toddle learning and documentation.
-
Work with Toddle representatives to understand and set-up progress reports.
-
Collaborate with the Learning Support teachers to facilitate and support the implementation of differentiation strategies within unit development.

Produce a programme handbook for the respective programme aimed at students and parents, updating it annually to ensure it has up-to-date information.

In collaboration with the Vice-Principal, identify technology needs; support the integration of technology across the curriculum.

Support teachers to become leaders in the IB network and beyond and engage within professional networks such as the IBO, ISABC, BCAIBWS.
-
Collaborate with the Vice Principal, or their designee, in the creation of a timetable that meets the needs of students, and the IB programmes standards and practices.
IB Leadership
-
Establish professional relationships with coordinators from ISABC schools and participate in activities sponsored by BCAIBWS.
-
Sign up all new Stratford Hall Junior School teachers for MyIB accounts and inform all staff of recent developments and publications from the IBO.
-
Ensure all regulations set by the IBO concerning programs, procedures, and standards and practices are adhered to as communicated in “Principles to Practice” documents.

Collaboratively engage in short and long term planning with the principals, teachers and other coordinators to continually strengthen the programme.

Co-lead the five-year IB evaluation processes, including the self-study (establishing timelines; coordinating and monitoring committee work; communicating with the appropriate IB office during the Self Study phase to ensure the school is compliant).

Represent Stratford Hall at IB-related events and other events as required.

Provide organizational support for the PYP Exhibition.

Support the transition process for students between the PYP and MYP.

2. Management

Assist in organizing events specific to the grade/class/subject area.
