About this Role
York House School invites applications for the position of Career Education and Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) Coordinator. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, enthusiastic, and dedicated to developing, coordinating, and facilitating a comprehensive WIL program for students in Grades 10 to 12. A passion for supporting youth in their career and life development, including fostering self-discovery and enabling them to realize their aspirations, is essential.
In addition to organizing Career Education Courses for Grades 10 and 11, the Coordinator will implement and oversee a new work-integrated learning internship program. This initiative will connect students with industry professionals to cultivate professional skills, explore potential career paths, and integrate their in-class learning with real-world experiences. Students will ultimately showcase their learning journey through a capstone project presentation.
The Coordinator should possess a strong understanding of how girls learn and the skills needed to thrive in contemporary society. Serving as a Teacher Advisor, this position also offers opportunities to engage in various academic activities within the Senior School.
The successful candidate will lead the WIL and Career Life Education (CLE) programs. Candidates must hold British Columbia teaching certification.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Education
- British Columbia Teaching Certification or equivalent
- Experience teaching in secondary education (preferably five years)
- Coursework in Career Education or related fields is advantageous
- Independent school experience is an asset
- Strong networking abilities to build community partnerships
- Experience in coaching and/or extracurricular activities is a bonus
Responsibilities
Organizing and Facilitating Career Education
- In partnership with the university academic counsellors and the Senior
- School vice principals, design and coordinate the scope and sequence of WIL/CLE/CLC program for grades 10-12
- Deliver WIL/CLC program content, in collaboration with other teachers
- Design and support integration of WIL/CLC courses and capstone
- Support students’ learning through debrief, feedback and structured reflection
- Design, coordinate WIL and implement WIL policies and procedures
- Coordinate guest speakers, parent and alumna panels and other opportunities for career exploration
Work with partner organizations:
- Identify, contact and support potential partner organizations to develop relationships and secure placements
- Provide partners with necessary information on student needs (e.g. medical or behavioral), if applicable and consented to by the student/family, so they can best support the student.
- Where necessary, support the partner in developing an accommodation plan for supporting a student (ex. because of an IEP)
- Coordinate additional WIL staff undertaking monitoring visits
- Communicate and consult with all YHS stakeholders involved with the placement e.g. students, parents/guardians, faculty/staff and alum
Develop and Perform Risk analysis:
- Perform partner organization site visits
- Conduct risk assessments to ensure the partners are managing risks and optimizing student safety
- Design and implement student preparation plans for risk management and identify relevant procedures the student must follow
- Broker networks with potential mentors and develop an inventory of those and community-based connections
- Immediately review or terminate, where appropriate, a placement where a health, safety, or welfare issue has been raised (by the student, staff on a monitoring visit, or other interested party)
Create the Capstone Program
- Work with Grade 11 students in support of a capstone and WIL projects
- Plan and implement a public exhibition where students showcase their capstone projects
- Document and prepare an annual report on the successes and challenges of the year
Other Responsibilities
- Performs the role of Teacher Advisor
- Participate in development and implementation of an
- Internship/Mentorship program
- Other duties as assigned to support the implementation of the strategic plan
- Other academic related administrative duties as assigned
- Participation in co-curricular and School Life activities
- May be asked to cover classes as needed
