Salary: $140,000 – $150,000 per annum

As a member of the Senior School Leadership Team, the Vice Principal, Student Wellness has overall responsibility for the pastoral care of all Senior School students, as well as several key components of student programming and experiences outside of conventional academic classes. This person will work in a collaborative manner and empower colleagues in order to ensure a highly supportive and engaging environment for all students.

The Vice Principal, Student Wellness will display highly ethical, professional behaviour and serves as a role model, nurturing empathy, compassion, and a sense of belonging for all students.

The Vice Principal, Student Wellness will serve as the primary leader for promoting and implementing best practices in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ), ensuring that all school policies, programs, and initiatives are aligned with our commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable learning environment for every student and staff member.

The Head of Athletics, Head of Learning Support, Head of Personal Counseling and School Nurse will report directly to the Vice Principal, Student Wellness. This individual will have teaching responsibilities equivalent to one block (0.2 FTE) and contribute to the advisory and co-curricular programs.

Work will be performed primarily at St. George’s Senior School (4175 West 29th Avenue, Vancouver), but meetings may be held occasionally at the Junior School (3851 West 29th Avenue, Vancouver). 

 

Responsibilities will include:

  • Align current pastoral initiatives with the School’s strategic vision while also proactively seeking out new opportunities that can contribute to the School’s development. This includes leading programs and practices that proactively attend to the physical, mental, social and emotional health of all students. 
  • Develop and implement research-based programming and initiatives encompassing all aspects of student wellbeing. This includes but is not limited to safeguarding, inclusion and belonging, self-regulation strategies, nutrition and diet, and sleep schedules and routines. 
  • Safeguarding: Develop and implement safe and effective internal reporting processes that ensure student safety and agency. 
  • Supervise the Senior School Head of Athletics, Head of Learning Support, Head of Personal Counseling and School Nurse to ensure that all aspects of the program proactively support student mental and physical wellness.
  • Actively collaborate with all key stakeholders, including the Director of Risk Management, when the school conducts Student Violence Threat Risk Assessments (VTRA).
  • Communicate with key stakeholders e.g. external agencies, parents and colleagues on student safeguarding matters.
  • Chair regular student support meetings that include the Senior School Principal, Personal Counsellors, Learning Support, and the Heads of Grade to ensure timely and consistent support of students with identified concerns.
  • Continuing with teaching responsibility, equivalent to one block (0.2 FTE) and contributing to the advisory and co-curricular programs.
  • Performing additional related duties as required. 

 

Qualifications and skills will include:

  • B.Ed. or equivalent combination of 5-7 years of relevant experience in teaching and leadership role in K-12.
  • BC Teaching Certificate or Independent School Teaching Certificate.
  • Superior EQ skills in self-awareness, self-management, social agility, impact and influence.
  • Proven track record of leadership success in a high functioning school environment.
  • The ability to identify trends and anticipate developments in our rapidly changing society, and ensure that St. George’s School delivers student life opportunities that enrich the students’ experience and prepare them for the world beyond the classroom.
  • Demonstrated track record of being an effective, caring and compassionate classroom teacher, ideally in a secondary (grade 8-12) setting.
  • Master’s degree in Leadership Administration or Education is considered an asset.
  • A Mental Health First Aid qualification is considered an asset.
  • A deep understanding and appreciation of the importance of justice, equity, inclusion and diversity.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Collaborative team player with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced learning environment.
