Junior School Assistant Principal (Full-Time)

Southpointe is also an official Candidate School for the IB Diploma Programme (Grade 11-12), which will complete its innovative offering of IB from entry to graduation. The educational programme is supported through modern, purpose-built facilities and amenities.

 

In addition to a teaching commitment, the Junior School Assistant Principal is responsible for operating and developing the PYP programme. This full-time leadership position commences August 14, 2023, for the 2023-2024 school year.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities
*These may include, but are not limited to…

  • Assume responsibility of day-to-day operations in the Junior School when the Junior School Principal is absent;
  • Regularly inform, collaborate and communicate with the Junior School Principal about all aspects related to the Junior School;
  • Identify staffing needs and play a leading and determinative role in the recruitment, hiring and retention of faculty;
  • Conduct formal performance evaluations of PYP teachers;
  • Lead or assist in conflict resolution and/or performance review meetings with faculty members, in conjunction with the VP (PYP Coordinator);
  • Oversee, monitor and manage the performance and duties of PYP Specialist Teachers;
  • Oversee the recruitment, programming and schedule of international GAP students;
  • Assist in the induction of new faculty members into the Junior School;
  • Serve as a direct resource for teachers in resolving day-to-day student conflict and behavioural issues;
  • In collaboration with the Junior School Principal, meet with parents to discuss student learning, behaviour, and social-emotional wellness of students;
  • Develop and maintain a duty schedule that provides a safe and manageable space for students to play outdoors; assume supervision duties when needed;
  • Assist the Junior School Principal with planning and executing emergency preparedness activities;
  • Oversee the risk management of Junior School field trips and educational activities;
  • Develop a K-5 outdoor education and field trip planning resource for teachers, students and parents;
  • Promote the use of technology integration in curriculum, collaboration and through co-curricular programming;
  • Share research-based best practices in incorporating technology in the Junior School;
  • Assist with student admissions and placements; attend weekend student assessments;
  • Share responsibility for maintaining student records and overseeing student welfare;
  • Assist with the development of the Junior School timetable and the master calendar of events for Kindergarten to Grade 5;
  • In collaboration with the Education Leadership Team, participate in the development of collective bargaining strategy, and assist in development of bargaining proposals relevant to Junior School goals and objectives;
  • Represent the Junior School in the Independent Schools Association of British Columbia Vice Principals Collaborative Group;
  • Take a leading role in editing report cards before publication;
  • Assist in the development of an enriched co-curricular programme and promote school spirit through Island (House) events in the Junior School;
  • Collaborate with teachers to develop an annual public speaking forum;
  • Plan, lead and facilitate student enrichment and community building events in the Junior School;
  • Oversee the Foundation Skills Assessment tests in Grade 4; ensure students are well prepared to perform at their best; assist teachers with planning and preparation;
  • Ensure effective communication and collaboration among all Junior School faculty members;
  • Contribute and assist with Parent Information sessions;
  • Oversee and manage employee performance, including determining appropriate consequential actions, in relation to the Professional Conduct for BC Educator guidelines, as outlined by the Ministry of Education;
  • Collaborate with the Communications and Marketing department to promote the Junior School through social media;
  • Assume teaching responsibilities for designated subjects in the Junior School.

 

Required Qualifications

  • A deep understanding of the role of administrative leaders in independent schools;
  • Significant experience as a K-5 educator with an excellent track record of success;
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail;
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively;
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, managerial, presentation and public-speaking skills;
  • Effective conflict resolution skills;
  • Experience in a leadership role working across K-5;
  • Master of Education or higher level training in administration and leadership.

 

Preferred Experience
* IB training and experience working in the IB, Primary Years Programme
