The primary purpose of the Senior Refrigeration Operator is to aid in directing the operations of the Charlie Purdey Arena and provide back up for the Arena Chief Engineer. The Senior Refrigeration Operator also serves a leadership function in plant maintenance and regulatory standards compliance for the facility.


Refrigeration Operations

  • Operate refrigeration equipment and plant components to ensure safe and efficient operation
  • Operate ice resurfacing equipment, ensuring that facility schedules are maintained
  • Designate or operate ice maintenance tools and equipment to ensure a high quality, safe ice surface is provided to the customer/client
  • Conduct, analyze, and record ice plant readings and take or recommend corrective actions
  • Once per shift, conduct complete mechanical rounds effecting repair and/or annotating same in the operators log
  • Complete regulatory logs on shift
  • Be conversant with and review, signing annually, Arena Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s), Risk
  • Assessment, and Ammonia Exposure Documentation
  • In the event of a leak or an emergency, respond accordingly as per school procedure, SOP’s, and the arena
  • Ammonia Exposure Plan, acting as Chief Engineer in his/her absence
  • Attend all ammonia leak notifications on shift or off as soon as practical, and be prepared to act as part of the repair and/or investigation team using gas mask or breathing apparatus; positive fit testing and successful
  • SCBA training will be a requirement when/if present
  • Supervise and assist arena users as needed
  • Ensure the physical security of the arena and its resources throughout and on completion of each shift
  • Conduct custodial tasks as per SOP’s, including the cleaning of exterior entrances and exterior cleaning of building fabric
  • Conduct interior and exterior facility maintenance tasks as per SOP’s
  • Remove snow and ice to ensure public and student safety
  • Backfill as Chief Engineer as directed 

Arena Management

  • Represent the school as the public facing Arena representative to external clients, regulatory bodies, and the community at large
  • Maintenance and development of external client relationships in accordance with revenue and usage targets
  • Enter facility rental bookings as directed and print summary reports as required
  • Monitor and analyze facility operations budgets and supplies and provide feedback and recommendations
  • Assist in the coordination of all internal client facility usage with the Shawnigan Director of Hockey Operations
  • Assist in the maintenance and development of external client relationships in accordance with revenue and usage targets

Maintenance Support

  • During seasonal workload fluctuations, assist Maintenance team with repair and maintenance duties across campus


  • Minimum, Fifth Class Power Engineer Certificate / BC Refrigeration Operator Certificate
  • At least 5 years’ experience with ice facility operations
  • Current WHMIS certification
  • Current First aid certification with AED
  • Emergency Respiratory/Gas Mask Fit Test
  • Arena Ice Maker’s Certificate or equivalent experience preferred
  • Able to fulfill residential regulatory proximity requirements when serving standby/callout duty
  • Advanced understanding of Arena Standard Operating Procedures
  • Proficient and knowledgeable with the operation of all arena mechanical systems
  • Remain current with arena SOP’s, Ammonia Exposure Control Plan and School Emergency and Fire Safety Plan
  • Regular and proper use of applicable Personal Protective Equipment, as stipulated by Management
  • Competent knowledge of arena software, including Orca view plant monitoring system, Microsoft Word,
  • Microsoft Excel, Book King, Zimbra, and Google Calendars
  • Familiarity with SLS HR and employment policies, Canada Labour Code Pt 2, BC Labour Code, BC Power
  • Engineers Boiler Pressure Vessel Refrigeration Safety Regulations, and WorkSafe BC regulations pertaining to employees
