JOB DESCRIPTION

ACCOUNTANT (Financial and Management Accounting)

Work closely with the Shawnigan Lake School Controller and Chief Financial Officer to support efficient accounting operations including guidance on financial plans, ensuring all tax activities are compliant with provincial and federal regulations, the production of periodic financial reports, the accurate maintenance of accounting records and the utilization of risk mitigation controls while ensuring reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles for not-for-profits.

Shawnigan Lake is renowned for its rugged beauty and its namesake, 7 kilometre long lake that provides the opportunity for fishing, swimming and sunbathing in the summer. Shawnigan Lake boarders the communities of Cobble Hill and Mill Bay and is a short commute from nearby cities Duncan and Langford.

 

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Controller and Chief Financial Officer, the responsibilities of the Accountant include but are not limited to,

  • Assist with full cycle accounting up to and including monthly and quarterly financial statements
  • Contribute toward timely and accurate financials to include variances in comparison to budget
  • Assist the Chief Financial Officer with annual budget preparation process and forecasts
  • Meet regularly with budget holders to review financial statements
  • Provide accurate reports on finances
  • Conduct tax planning and oversight
  • Prepare income tax returns
  • Resolve any tax-related issues
  • Assist the Controller by ensuring proper and necessary accounting controls are implemented and maintained to protect the School’s assets, including cash management and compliance with taxation
  • Work with the finance team to prepare monthly and year-end financial statements and monthly bank reconciliations
  • Support the Controller with timely bank reconciliations, monitor various bank balances and ensure proper cash flows are on hand to cover operating costs
  • Ensure required remittances are completed and submitted on time
  • Review accounting transactions and liaise with finance team to action any adjustments
  • Maintain chart of accounts and customize reports requested by the Chief Financial Officer, and perform other financial analysis as required
  • Contribute toward year-end accounting procedures to fulfill requirements of the annual audit
  • Manage fixed asset schedules
  • Assist the Controller by ensuring effective financial controls are in place, documented and updated where required
  • Assist with year-end audits and prepare associated working papers
  • Complete and file regulatory reporting where required
  • Assist with preparation of various year-end schedules and analysis related to the year-end audit
  • Perform other duties as requested


REQUIREMENTS

  • A professional accounting designation, CPA (CA, CGA, CMA)
  • Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance or similar
  • Minimum 3 years previous accounting experience
  • Experience with computerized accounting systems
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
  • Able to multitask and adjust to changing priorities
  • Strong accounting skills with attention to detail, high level of accuracy
  • Advanced Excel, knowledge of Word and PowerPoint
  • Superior demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills
  • Strong working knowledge of accounting including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and tax
