KGMS is a Primary to Grade 12 co-educational Special Education School located in the Maplewood neighbourhood of North Vancouver. We provide specialized education that supports the needs of students with diverse learning needs. The Vice Principal (VP) of Elementary and Middle School is a core member of the Educational Leadership Team and shares responsibility for leadership and management of Elementary and Middle School Programs, at strategic and operational levels. Kenneth Gordon Maplewood School is seeking an energetic, outgoing and collaborative teacher/educational leader who shares a commitment to inquiry and concept-based teaching and learning. The VP will work alongside the Principal of Elementary and Middle School, whose focus is primarily on the academic programme, the VP will be responsible for all aspects of student life, well-being, and pastoral care, with a special focus on leadership development and community building.

The successful candidate will also provide coverage for teachers as necessary, and assume teaching responsibilities for designated subjects in Elementary and Middle School.

As a member of the Senior School Leadership Team, the VP will assume or share responsibility for:

Student Leadership:

  • Promoting a strong, supportive student culture with a focus on the importance of balance, fun, engagement, inclusivity, and personal well-being
  • Promoting a culture of respect and high standards for social interaction, personal conduct, and attendance
  • Collaborating with High School colleagues to ensure a successful transition into the Senior School
  • Managing disciplinary and behavioural concerns with a fair and consistent approach
  • Serve as a direct resource for educators in resolving day-to-day student conflict and behavioural issues 

Levels Leadership & Management:

  • Participating in faculty recruitment and onboarding
  • Lead or assist in conflict resolution and or performance review meetings with faculty ensuring compliance with the Collective Agreement
  • Assist in the orientation of new faculty members into the Elementary and Middle Schools
  • Lead or assist in staff observations or evaluations in compliance with the Collective Agreement
  • Contributing to the development of co and extracurricular programs
  • Organizing Town Hall(s) and other assemblies and events
  • Regularly planning and participating in special events, such as parent
    presentations, celebrations, and community events
  • Leading informational and educational events for parents and ensuring a productive partnership between school and home
  • Participating in Strategic Action Planning and long-term planning activities
  • Other duties as assigned by the Head of School

Required Qualifications:

  • Must have current British Columbia teacher certification, 5+ years of teaching experience- Primary to Grade Nine.
  • Masters Degree in Educational Leadership or related area
  • Previous leadership experience in an educational setting
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for connecting with students beyond the classroom, through athletics, co-curricular, etc
  • Possess knowledge of Special Education interventions and administration
  • Successful collaborative experience as a member of a multi-disciplinary team working in support of complex learners.
  • Experience with the use of educational technology for teaching and learning
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal communication, managerial, presentation and public speaking skills

Salary range of $95,000 to $111,000 based on education and experience.
