Kenneth Gordon Maplewood School, located in North Vancouver invites applications for the position of Head of School to begin work August 1, 2022.

KGMS, founded in 1973, is a coeducational day school for students with learning differences in Kindergarten through Grade 12. It is a member of the Independent Schools Association of British Columbia and the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools.

Kenneth Gordon Maplewood School is currently recognized globally as one of the leading centres of excellence for working with students with learning differences. Using a research-based universal design model, KGMS has created a unique educational environment for meeting the needs of all learners. The school has the lowest student/educator ratio in British Columbia and an outstanding and personalized academic programme, which includes providing daily one to one tutoring to its students, delivered by a talented faculty and counselling department and supported by a dedicated, passionate and dynamic leadership team.

The Head of School is ultimately accountable to the Board of Directors and has the overall responsibility for the academic and administrative leadership of the School. The new Head of School will be a well-respected educational leader, with the ability to provide inspiration, support, and leadership to the entire community. They will have significant administrative experience earned in a comparable school environment, a track record of success in advancement, and a background and passion for the education of children with learning differences. Above all, the new Head will be a person of character and strong values, endowed with the warmth and authenticity that allows them to connect with all members of the KGMS community.

The successful candidate will have earned an advanced degree and demonstrate evidence of other intellectual pursuits and professional growth and will have experience in senior leadership in an independent school, preferably Head or Deputy Head level.

Reporting to the Board of Governors, the Head will be expected to:

  • Celebrate, advance and be loyal to the mission and core values of Kenneth Gordon Maplewood School;
  • Oversee overall program development to maintain high standards of excellence in serving students students with a range of backgrounds and abilities;
  • Cultivate and delegate appropriately to the senior management team;
  • Oversee all administrative areas, including admissions and marketing, advancement, buildings & grounds and finance;
  • Pursue the strategic initiatives developed by and agreed upon with the Board of Directors;
  • Attract, retain, develop, inspire, mentor, supervise and evaluate the faculty and staff to preserve high quality and consistency in the delivery of the program with a positive school climate

A proven track record in his or her personal and professional life that reflects a commitment to and passion for continuous growth and improvement;
The ability to multi-task, prioritize and delegate with confidence;
An overall management style characterized by inclusiveness, appropriate transparency, approachability and support balanced by decisiveness and accountability;
A commitment to working with students with diverse learning needs and strengths;
A compassionate and balanced approach to dealing with students, parents and faculty and staff;
A proven capacity to communicate orally and in writing to faculty, staff and parents with consistency, clarity and vision;
Sophistication in financial management and strong analytical skills that ensure the continued financial stability of the institution; and,
The highest ethical, moral and professional standards.
