Queen Margaret’s School is an independent Preschool to Grade 12 day and boarding school with a strong, nurturing, community ethos; set in a beautiful campus of 30 acres on beautiful Vancouver Island. We are looking for an experienced Facilities Manager who has knowledge, understanding and skills relating to the upkeep of the buildings and the associated facilities of a busy boarding school campus.
Reporting to the Director of Finance and Operations, the Facilities Manager will be responsible for the administration of the campus operation, manage a team of dedicated maintenance and transportation professionals, contractors and assist in developing plans for future works and major projects while ensuring the effective maintenance of existing campus facilities. The successful candidate will have the following skills, background, and interest:
3 years + experience working at a managerial level or in a similar role / multi-trade environment.
Ability to lead a team.
Previous experience planning and managing infrastructure projects and budgets.
Working knowledge of civil engineering, architectural, mechanical and electrical work.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
High level of initiative, and capacity to be a proactive problem solver.
Ability to analyze information and make recommendations and decisions.
Exceptional communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills.
High level of organizational skills, with the ability to work under deadlines with conflicting demands from various departments.
Experience reading and interpreting plans.
Enthusiastic, energetic, a self-starter with the ability to work independently.
Ability to conduct research, prepare and present information.
Ability to be tactful, demonstrate excellent judgement and work as a positive and collaborative team member.
Class 2 Driver License is preferred but not required as training will be provided as necessary
Qualification in a related discipline an asset or a willingness to learn.
Responsibilities include:
Ensure the security, maintenance and availability of the buildings, furniture, fittings and equipment, providing a satisfactory physical environment and promoting the efficient use of the School’s assets.
Actively manage project consultants, subcontractors, schedule, cost, and quality to ensure the project’s success.
Provide technical and planning support to the maintenance and grounds team.
Provide progress and summary reports on project construction progress and related budget.
Procure materials and services required for projects.
Work with local authorities on permits such as sewer, water, building and development.
Ensure Health and Safety standards are maintained and a safety culture flourishes.
Ensure projects are completed to the School’s standard of excellence.
Work with the facilities team, contractors and suppliers to create standards and prepare project budgets, timelines for both ongoing maintenance projects and capital investment projects overall.
Perform inspection of infrastructure, furniture and fixtures, and update maintenance plans as required.
Support project design, constructability and costing feedback, and coordinate projects with stakeholders to meet school needs.
Contribute to the strategic planning and development of the School campus and be proactive in identifying the most appropriate and effective solutions to developing the facilities and needs of the School.
Create and maintain an accurate and up-to-date annual maintenance plan.
To prepare school sites for all school events.
To ensure all QMS buses are in safe condition to drive and supervise transportation team to meet all School Transportation needs.
Ensure a safe work environment without risk to health.
Experience liaising with the Ministry of Education.
